The POTC figure that was mentioned before all the hullabaloo is Marty and he comes with Jack the Monkey and is a pretty cool figure. Looks just like the actor, I forget his name. And the monkey's pretty cool too.

I knew from the title of this thread that there would be a joke about me in it somewhere.

My niece married a dude in Canada who's last name is Midgett. He's like 6'5" -- and yes, he's been called "The World's Tallest Midgett" several times....

OK untill Kam returns I guess that I am the shortest board member here so I am as close as you guys get to a person of miniature stature. To settle this once and for all, if you want to be completely PC we are not midgets, little people, dwarfs, elfs, runts, ETC. we are just vertically challanged. ;)

In this case there are so many better terms than what was used, like little person or dwarf. It's just a sign of respect to others, as you and I would not throw around the N-word or any other such word that could be taken the wrong way.

But again, 'dwarf' and 'midget' are not synonymous and interchangeable words. Calling someone who's a midget a dwarf is just as insulting, I'd think; because that's simply not a term that applies to that person. In that case, tone of voice and intention are irrelevant because you're simply wrong.

From the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:
Quote:
Main Entry: midget
2sometimes offensive : a very small person; specifically : a person of unusually small size who is physically well-proportioned (my emphasis)

Quote:
Main Entry: dwarf
1 a: a person of unusually small stature; especially : one whose bodily proportions are abnormal (again, my emphasis)

If somebody that's a midget gets insulted by being called the word that specifically denotes his physical condition, that person is just playing the martyr for a non-existent cause.

I just love how TC thinks he's the shortest one on the board, makes me feel warm inside.

I actually come from a long line of " midgets" those people who for one reason or another are perfectly proportioned yet are extremely short in stature. Most of my maternal Grandfathers family were 5ft and under. Fortunately my Dads side of the family are 5'11 and taller so genetics split the difference and made me 5'6, which makes me the shortest male on both sides of my family, lucky me :-/ .

Midget is actually a dirogatery term now-- this was not true at the turn of the 19th to 20th century when the phrase gained popularity. I'm not personally offended by the term, but my grandfather was. He once compared it to being called impotent, feeling that someone was saying that he was less of a man because of his stature. His size even kept him of of the service.
