Another board posted pics of The Force Awakens Black series (fully articulated) 6" figures:

I'm a casual Star Wars collector, but I have to mention something that was said by another collector. There was a toy podcast a while back that pointed out how Hasbro is trying to herd collectors into the 6" figure scale. I discussed this on another board and got this response. It applies to Mavel Legends vs. Marvel Universe figures, but it applies to Star wars as well:

Quote:
...I just can't see anyone being foolish enough to think that a mass migration could be stirred directly, let alone indirectly and without any proof of that being their mission statement. I mean without anything actually being said to that affect, you havta base those assumption on the MU line as being made so unattractive anymore, that it is not only driving people away from it but also into the arms of the LEGENDS scaled format - which...personally, as much as I'd want to defend either line, I find both presumptuous and insulting to the 1/18 scale community.
I mean if this line is faltering in quality, which it seems to be (I don't feel like its ever had the presence that it could've had), then that doesn't mean that defeated fans are just going to go...'Oh well, I'll buy Legends then, I guess'. That's too much of a presumption, its insulting and only half of the outcome is likely to be true - the half where fans say...'!@#$ this', and just quit the line. That's it. They're not gonna all succumb to some to mass-delusion where they all give in and allow Hasbro some consolation prize of their continued consumer loyalty for something they don't really want. WTF is that? They're just gonna blow off the line they wanted and..it'll die. Happens all the time...
k

I agree and so do a lot of people. Most of my collection is 1/6 or 1/18 (12" or 4") so why buy items that don't fit in with the majority of my collection? I'm not suddenly going to start buying Marvel Legends or Star Wars Black because there's nothing else.

Considering how their last out were peg warmers at my local Walmart and with the clearance price of $9 they are still having trouble getting rid of them. I can't see parent dishing out 20 bucks as quickly as they do 6 or 7.

Personally, I'm excited about these figures. Yes, they are 5POA and am okay with that. More than okay with it, I actually prefer it. I collect items to put them on display. Sometimes in a mini-dio, but most of the time just kind of static display. It's just how I like to do it. So if the sculpting is good, the articulation isn't too relevant to me. I'm also quite nostalgic. While I can see the clear advantages of the modern design of figures, the disadvantages jump out at me more. I just simply prefer figure design of old. Final reason, my son. He is 8 and modern figures are in pieces within minutes, if not seconds, of him starting to play them. 5POA figures take a beating and keep going. And does articulation really matter to most 8 year olds? When a Stormtrooper is taking a nose dive off a desk, it doesn't matter in the least. It didn't when I was 8, it doesn't matter now that my son is.

Oh and there is fact that they are far cheaper than the black series figures. Kind of a big deal.

Well, the idea is that Hasbro wants to push collectors into 6", but wants 1/18" for the kids. As if the collectors are suddenly going to rush into the 6" scale, when the vast majority of Star Wars figures produced up to this point are 1 1/18th.

I considered picking a few up for about two seconds then passed and got beef jerky instead. Looking back I stand by my decision, it was good jerky.

Considering if been collecting the 1/18" scale for almost 40 years it's a good bet I'm not gonna change sizes. I still have several of my original fisher price adventure people and Star Wars figures.

It mattered to me (and everyone I knew in school) when I was 8 in 1982. ARAH G.I. Joe figures were released with more points of articulation than the Star Wars figures of the time, and my 5-POA SW figures were slowly but surely placed back in my collector's cases and shoved in the closet.

It mattered to me in 1977 when I was five and the Micronauts debuted. Super-articulation was *always* the standard for 18th scale.

Articulation mattered to me as well, because as soon as I got some GI Joes, my SW figures were "promoted" to bathtub toys.

I didn't buy any new SW figures until they added the elbow and knee joints.

I honestly don't remember if I was consciously thinking about articulation as an 8 year old. I know I pretty much only played with GI Joe and Transformers when they were the dominant cartoon presence in my life despite having some of the Star Wars 5 POA as well as some Marvel stuff that was 5 POA, but I think it was more the result of me wanting to play with toys related to my favorite cartoons. I say that because I later played with Ninja Turtle stuff that I think was 5 POA at that time.

I remember playing only certain Star Wars figures with my Joes. Han Solo, Luke
, Leia, storm troopers and the pilots usually made the cut. Maybe a few othe humans to use as captives. But all the aliens turned into a retirement community.

So I will give you that. GIJoe at the time was more versatile to play with but they were also just as sturdy as the 5 POA Star Wars figures. The black series Star Wars figures and the current GIJoe line just don't hold up to kid play. Heads, hands, and feet are everywhere. Total carnage.

So, the basic consensus could be the classic ARAH Joe construction was the ideal balance of articulation and kid friendly?

Well, like the Bible kinda says, 'Spare the rod, your crap's gonna get jacked up'. Micronauts were way more fragile and loss-prone than any line since, imho. There hasn't been a line since that had removable guts and frickin' *spats*, and I only lost any of mine when my mom cleaned my room while I was in school and threw out my Rocket Tubes, Death Star, and G1 Headquarters (and all the guys stationed in each, as well) all in one go.

Gah! Our throw away society annoys me.
There has to be some real gems in those garbage hills. :(

I know I was not as hard on my toys as some of my friends. None of my Joes got broken. However my brother's Scarlett & Torpedo's crotches were not so lucky.
My parents drilled into me the fact that if I broke a toy I would not get any replacements.
