A decent alternative is to use Acrylic Matte Medium and print out your design in color on paper. You can get matte medium at most arts and crafts stores. Giga Bread has a tutorial about it where he transferred a camo pattern to a figure using this method.

Found this:

I used the technique with the writing on these crates.

Those are some damned impressive crates. As somewhat of an expert in the medium of making things out of coffee stirrers, I am really impressed.

I just use papilio clear waterslide laser printer paper,
http://www.amazon.com/Papilio-Laser-Clear-Waterslide-sheets/dp/B005DFLVOG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409967071&sr=8-1&keywords=papilio+clear+waterslide

I apply it with setting solution,
http://www.amazon.com/Microscale-Indust ... g+solution

and cover with paint on acrylic clear coat.

On a white background, anything works. On non-white background, doing black symbols or lettering works perfect. Anything white is a problem as the white part will be clear on the decal and colors can be tricky if being done over darker colors. The darker color will affect the shade of the color of the decal.

I'll chime in and say that I've been pretty disappointed with my ink jet printer for waterslides. It's a really nice photo printer, but the ink doesn't want to stay on the waterslide paper.

Is it coming off when you get it wet to put the decal on, or does the ink bead up on the paper, when you try to print it?

The beading up I've seen on occasion, if there's something on the paper. Also, make sure it's the right paper. Hobby shop sold me laser paper once, and I didn't realize until I got home.

If it's coming off when you try to use the decal, my experience with ink jet water slides is to dip the decal once, for no more than a second, then wait a few seconds for it to loosen up on the backer paper. Also need to make sure you've got a good coating of sealer on the paper, first. Most any spray on clear coat seems to work, but I use the Testors decal spray, myself. I like to give the paper a couple of light coats, then one or two heavier coats.

If it ain't broke, take it apart and lose some of the pieces. Then, it'll be a custom.

I have never used ink jet, but the laser paper it pretty durable after printing. I cut them out and soak them in extra hot water for 45 seconds to a minute to soften them because they are so thick and my images stay on fine. And I don't spray them with anything prior to using them.
