I don't really care if they go v1, JvC or new design, as long as the figure is good and doesn't feel half-assed.

The more I think about it, I guess the 7-pack Slaughter's Marauders Spirit is a pretty good base for a GvC Nunchuk. Obviously he's not barefoot, but I would consider that a plus.

Not that hard to swap in 25th Quick-kick's legs for Nunchuk.

These are others that I am pretty sure are also 02-06 references. Though some of these were old sculpt repaints, they still acknowledge the era.

I'm uncertain how these are homages to the new sculpt era...

Those, especially Duke and Storm Shadow... are perfect examples of how to horribly half-ass it.

I kinda hope some new sculpt ideas get revisited. Not just characters, but versions of certain characters. If they bring back his trademark mustache, I'd love to see a modern era Leatherneck based on his TRAHC or VvV versions.

yeah okay I forgot about these two. Definitely GvC and VvV inspired, both of which I liked seeing homages being paid to.

sorry, no. no way. they might also be labeled "Night Watch" but they are nowhere close enough to the 2005 Night Watch to be called homages.

that is a dubious tribute at best. Sad effort.

The Snake Eyes from the Retaliation 3-pack (this one http://generalsjoes.com/reviews/2012/re ... eeyes.html ) is a dead ringer for the VvV wave 7 Snake Eyes when geared up.

I also still contend that ROC Air Raid is inspired by Barrel Roll.

Unlike a lot of others in that list, this one was a deliberate homage to the GvC version.
http://www.yojoe.com/action/02/cobracommander11.shtml

But like the rest of the figures in that pack it seemed very half-assed... but it's still the most "homage-accurate" one...

The 2008 figure actually started out as a new Storm Shadow figure before getting a late color swap. So who knows if they were thinking in lines of 04 or 92. They were, at the time, just changing things up instead of having one more Storm Shadow on shelves. But it still came out more new sculpt imo.

And that Wild Bill is actually meant to be this:
http://www.yojoe.com/action/03/wildbill6.shtml

And I would agree that the Night Watch was a lot different. But since "Night Watch" was created at the time and it still consists of troopers/officers, the comparison really can't be denied. It was a reused concept from that era. I just wish someone would revisit the Anti-Venom Task Force.

Well it might, but considering how it's a Storm Shadow repaint with a head that uses a design a lot of Storm Shadow heads use, it's a bit of a strain to say it's deliberately going for the VvV Ninja Trooper.
The Storm Shadow this was meant to be was originally designed as "88 Storm Shadow in v1 colors", more or less. That makes the Ninja Viper basically be "What if the Ninja Viper was a repaint of the 88 Storm Shadow rather than the 84".

I dunno, I'd say he'd need a lot more silver to match this. As it stands, the only similarity is the grey base.

Hell yes.

I think it's nit-picking at best. The head choice makes a far greater argument for homage to the new sculpt-era figure which is an homage to the ARAH figure.

Except the head choice, and arm choice, and weapon choice, are all there because the entire tooling was originally planned for a Storm Shadow figure, but was changed into a Ninja-Viper to shake things up a bit. The Storm Shadow it was before was not designed as an homage to the GvC Storm Shadow that the Ninja Trooper was a retool of, it was designed with the 88 version in mind, hence the sleeves and the hood and the bamboo leg protectors.

This is what was originally planned:
http://www.amazon.com/G-I-Joe-Anniversa ... B001JOUFRE
But then they basically replaced the white with teal and made it a Ninja Viper. Unless the designers straight up say it was deliberately bringing up the Valor Vs Venom Ninja Trooper by doing that, I'm finding it quite a stretch, especially when the Ninja Trooper had short sleeves and arm wraps that would've been more effectively homaged using Storm Shadow's regular 25th anniversary arms.
