We're customizers, so we can turn our Joes into pretty much anything we want.
Back in the days though, when Joe time was only play time, did you use your figures as other characters?

I remember using the Hiss driver as Spider-Man.
Outback was Chuck Norris.
Storm Shadow V2 was the White Tiger, a ninja vigilante.
Blowtorch was James Bond or X-Wing pilot Luke while Ghostrider was my Han Solo. Armored Cobra Commander with a Batman cape became my Darth Vader.

What about you?

Sci-Fi was Megaman for a while for me.

Once in awhile I believe I did, but mostly I used other figures in my Joe-verse:
DC Powers Lex Luthor- he was an arms dealer rival of Destro
Captain Power and his crew were armored special forces

I do remember Scarlet got rescued a few times by Spiderman.

Gyro Viper was Cobra Commander with a removable helmet.

this is what i always try to tell people when i was a kid i NEVER played g.i.joe. me and my best friend took a bunch of our favorite joes apart and made up completely new characters and played all sorts of weird street gang related things influenced by the warriors and escape from new york and even the outsiders. the joes we didnt take apart we used their regular names for them but they were completely different characters. we had various other in scale figures mixed in as well, we would get any kung fun like figures we could find and we had a jawa that was a mysterious miyagi like teacher to our 2 main characters we always used and that everything was always based around. our 2 main characters were actually just a quick kick and the second one was v1 storm shadow legs zartan chest rock n rolls head and someones bare muscle arms, he was a sort of chuck norris. we also had a spare scarlet head on i think a v1 snake eyes body that was some young new wave type guy. this was around the 84-86 period. those were the days.
really does make me wish the modern figures had a backscrew, that is so fun for kids.

Sci-Fi was Robocop because of the uncanny helmet resemblance.

Also, I was not yet ready to accept the fact that Joes in neon colors were soon to become the norm.

So making him Robocop somehow made him more BA despite the ridiculousness of his setup: fire a man-portable laser at your enemy which has to be kept on the target for a long while to do anything remotely damaging (see filecard: http://www.yojoe.com/action/86/scifi.shtml) -AND- wear a neon green jumpsuit while doing so; ya know, just to make sure the enemy has every chance to see you.

Torch with Mutt's mac-10 was Snake Plisskin.

Thundarr the Barbarian was the result of Bespin Luke's head on a Hoth Rebel Trooper's body with Luke's yellow light saber.

Before I knew that Scarface was just a regular looking trooper with a messed up face, Boba Fett was always Scarface, his scarred face hidden behind the helmet of awesomeness.

Since I didn't have too many Joes as a kid, my friend Cameron and I would use certain Joes as the Voltron Lion pilots, and he had a big Voltron figure to boot. Skystikers were Veretech fighters until he got the big Matchbox Veritech and we used Ace and Duke as Rick and Roy

Snake Eyes v. 2 was a superhero i called The Wraith. He was a mercenary soldier who stole a piece of phasing tech and got shot while wearing it. As a result, his natural state was intangible and he had to focus his concentration to be able to touch things. He swore vengeance on the criminal gang that double crossed him and eventually discovered that doing good stuff made him feel good.

Blowtorch was his arch nemesis, Dr. Sol, who figured out that intense light and heat could force The Wraith into a solid and vulnerable state.

Tele-viper was a jet-pack wearing mercenary called Merlin, who was contracted to take the Wraith out.

Storm Shadow became White Light, the ninja subjected to experimentation to duplicate Wraith's powers.

E honda was Tsunami, the disgraced Sumo who served as the bodyguard for the head of the criminal organization that betrayed Wraith.

I don't know if this counts, but I used Snake Eyes as a cobra infiltrator. With the name "Snake Eyes" it kinda made sense. When he betrayed the Joes, it was revealed that his real name was Black Mamba.

Of course, this was before the Snake Eyes origin story in the comics... at that point he became a Joe once and for all.

Right now I am in the process of going year by year and making a master list of every figure release. Then I plan to go through and figure out what I would use them for.

Mostly this is to come up with a definitive figure for each character and re-use the extra versions.
