Well played, sir. That earned a hearty laugh out of me, and then I had to minimize my window before people asked me what I was doing at work.

Since the movie isn't released yet...

Thanx, Kilcarr, but my Wheaties are wet enough now...

Well, what _are_ you doing at work? It's a nice day. Go outside and goof off.

I mean holy crap people, you act like its the end of the world. The movie may actually benefit from the delay (the toys are screwed though), and in all likelihood, you'll all hate it anyway once you see it cuz that's how Joe fans roll.

Sure the movie can only get better and I don't mind, but it's actually the toys I'm worried about.
This big news comes only a few days before the official release date of the toys.
It simply can't be good for the brand. Let's face it, GI Joe is a toy line and the movie is it's by product instead of being the reversed situation like the other blockbusters.

Avengers, Batman, Spider-man, etc: toys from the movies.
GI Joe: toys from the movie from the toys.

Maybe Retaliation can earn the honor (albeit dubious) of being the only movie (is it?) to ever have mega-bucks Super Bowl ads two years in a row! It was actually pretty fun watching GI Joe get the royal treatment in front of the biggest TV audience earlier this year; it'd be kinda sad though to watch that in 2013 again but with people going, "I thought that already came out?"

I hope some of the above speculation about marketing dollars being funny-money that can re-appear for a second marketing blitz is true.

And yes, the decision hurts the toy line more than anything, but may prove to benefit the movie; which is ironic since as noted above you are then crushing the toy line to save a movie which only exists because of the toy line.

Hasbro plans these things a year ahead. They said that much in Q&A's. I don't see how they can really just stop the whole line from coming out. They would need something to fill the gap for 9 months.

Like I said, something is aloft here. You just canceled a movie, of which it's sole purpose was to ignite sales on a toy line owned by the Porducer of the film.

So.. you halt production...

Screw the release of the merchandising, which equals multi-millions in blow the to merch push, and store space. (they pay for those big displays)
Throw away millions in advertising, including a 500K Superbowl AD.
Require the talent to come back for more PR, when they will be doing other productions, once again money.
Halting the paychecks of the entire production crew (BTW paramount doesn't pay the staff until the movies finished, several salaries wont be fufilled,
all these techs, and production members, now have to find more work, while keeping the future open to finish this production, which is a major pita)

All that for a 3D release?, for a little bit bigger draw from the foreign market?
Don't believe a word, damage control is what they are in right now.

Word is now that Target is actually sending back their Retaliation stock, pulling it from stores to go back to warehouses. That means they will literally have no Joe toys to sell for the foreseeable future. They probably don't care though, I doubt much that these retail chains know or care the difference between "20 Arctic Destros on pegs" and "20 of several different characters on pegs" as they tend to go by "a toy is a toy" mentality. They probably think if full pegs aren't selling, the entire brand is a flop, and it' snot because it's 20 of the exact same toy.

Whatever reason this is happening, Hasbro doesn't have any options but to expand their quickie dollar store repaint line and just crank out a bunch of random figures fast, if they want to have anything to sell. But whatever's going on I seem more willing to stick to my "Brian Goldner wants this line totally dead and this is happening because he wants it to" theory. Or the people at Hasbro in charge of this mess are really just incompetent, either one is quite possible. I have to doubt this was solely Paramount's decision.

I suppose IF I see CC in a store in the next couple of weeks I'll grab one, otherwise the line is all but dead to me now, as it's bound to be dead to the general consumer public at this rate.
