Is it me or are some people just crotchety this time of year:

So RoC isn't the Joe I watched as a kid... It isn't supposed to be MY Joe, it's Joe for the new generation.
As for 80s cartoon, they all lacked more than superficial character development because they were meant to be shown on Saturday mornings with large bowls of surgery cereal for kids, kids like I was in 1989... I feel worse for kids today because people want them to eat bran and watch PC Learn-a-vision that makes 80s cartoons look like Faulkner novels...
Thanks I needed to get that out -

Long story short:

People who complain about their childhood being destroyed by what is in their mind a poor adaptation of something they enjoyed as a child are probably still living in their minds as a child.
Think about how Plato or Shakespeare would feel if they would be able to see the myriad of poor, off par, low budget adaptations of their works that have been performed over the last 500 years.

And for a real argument:

For an example of film making that stray close to the source material watch the Watchmen, while it may not be 100% true to the original that was openly the directors aim and it falls flat because we've seen it before.

What did you want, exactly? For them to just re-do More Than Meets The Eye and The MASS Device shot for shot in live-action?

YES, A THOUSAND TIMES YES. That IS what I want them to do! It doesn't have to be the same plot, but dammit, make them look like the originals, doing what they do best! I want to go watch a living cartoon, not a weird version of reality. These concepts are, in a way, inherently unrealistic! Go with that! A Transformers movie where they transformed into the old vehicles and mass shifted would have been forgiven in a heart beat by fans and others alike.

There's so much unbelievable in these movies that including some that actually warm the heart of the audience instead of piss it off might be a good idea.

Snake-Eyes had more too, mainly thanks to the presence of his rivalry with Storm Shadow. I mean what personality did Snake-Eyes ever had in the toon?

Snake Eyes danced. And dressed in drag.

OK come to think of it ROC Snake Eyes has him beat hands down.
Well not for nothing, but in the cartoon, Snake Eyes was the type of character who would sacrifice himself in a cave of radioactive crystals so his team could escape successfully. He's the type of character that would trudge through the snow with radio active poisoning and still find companionship with a wolf. Our take on a dozen Cobras at once and still be standing.

Here's the thing for me, why do the genres, that are meant for completely different audiences, have to be so similar. The comic is not the old cartoon. The old cartoon is not Resolute. Resolute is not the movie. Why can't fans be entertained by different facets of GI Joe instead of expecting them to all blend together seamlessly.

There is a lot I wasn't thrilled with about the movie. But I'm glad GI Joe doesn't try to be Star Wars or Star Trek with their ever expanding universe canon and mulit-generational histories. You end up with stuff that doesn't fit and usually gets retconned out/in at some point.

Very good question.
I'm not a fan of EVERYTHING Joe, but much like with Transformers I am more than happy to welcome different continuities and takes on the subject matter. I liked Devil's Due's Reloaded. I found Sigma Six interesting, though the show aired in a timeslot I couldn't watch it on and the figures were too expensive for me to really get into.
The Movie is a continuity I found myself really liking. Excellent popcorn movie with lots of action, likeable heroes, a wonderful "near future" technological setting and a plethora of "expanded universe" action figures. Considering it follows on the "remakes from the 80s" 25th Anniversary line, I feel like I'm in fanboy heaven because the figures are so refreshing.
(I'm actually less enthusiastic about the "new" Marvel follow-up from IDW than others because I feel they should focus more on their own created universe and keep doing new things)

This goes without saying.

Wow, that article was awful. It might as well have been written by a usenet troll. As has been said, he based everything on Rottentomatoes which wrecks his credibility right there, and the whole thing amounts to inane Comic-Book-Guy level ranting. He's right about MOTU and SMB, obviously, but I rather enjoyed RoC and TF1. ROTF, not so much.

Terrible writing. How does something new destroy something old?

The one critique I'll levy at Hollywood is this: their blockbusters are increasingly looking stoic and boring.

Michael Bay and James Cameron are goofs, but at least they have fun.

This guy really needs to take a step back and realize that he just ranted "LASER BLAST" about action movies based on fictional toy and cartoon properties aimed at children.
