This one wasn't hard at all. There were some G.I.Joes on the year that were a little -- off -- and maybe it was just that they didn't get all that much media coverage and so didn't have a chance to develop that much personality, but the final decision was easy.

COUNTDOWN.

After turning out a really, really superb Astronaut figure in 1987 with Payload -- THIS was what they followed it up with? Countdown not only looked even duller than the original Ace, a figure I like and who was probably the closest thing design-wise the G.I.Joe Team had to an astronaut before Payload came along, but worst of all -- THE HELMET DIDN'T STAY PUT! Turn him over and it just falls off. Yeah, that's gonna work well in space.

Countdown just wasn't a very impressive figure, he had a HUGE design flaw in my opinion, and he was a very sorry follow-up to Payload.

Windchill. Why? Yellow eyes maybe. I dunno. Maybe I voted for him because he was last on the list and I didn't feel like going through the choices again :shifty:

Many have HTF guns or mics and lots of interesting accessories, but none really stands out as something I like anyway. I could have voted for any of them

lets see:

Dogfight:
WHo invited the village people to join Joe?

Downtown:
Not bad... except for that hat, Is he a junior boxer, or what?

GI Trekker pretty much pointed out all my issues with Countdown

Countdown and Rock n Roll are two of my favorites from this year. I had to vote for Deejay. I just did not like the design of the figure at all. I don't know if it was the colors, the mold, or both, but he just did not appeal to me in any way.

Deejay. He's wearing high heels.

I loved countdown. The helmet on my original one I had never fell off it stayed no problem.

I can't vote for these least favorites, but I have to second DeeJay's crazy-lame boots. Still, since he gave his (fictional) life fighting Cobra, it's hard to dog him.

This was such a disappointing year. Long awaited updates of Stalker, Rock & Roll, SE, and Deep Six kept me in the line, but 1989 was the first year since 1985 that I did not collect card-backed Joes as a complete-ist.

In hindsight, '86, '87, & '88 were not the awesome years I thought they were when I was 7-10 y.o., and the Hasbro-burning had already begun with Cobra-La.

Dee-Jay.

Countdown is a close second. Another astronaut was fine, Payload needed company, but the helmet seemed weak and I dislike the holster on his stomach, hurts the flow of the figure.

Forgot about Windchill's freaky yellow eyes -- maybe because I used a cactus needle to paint them brown as soon as I could. HUGE improvement, and the design of the figure isn't bad. But the yellow eye bit was weird, and in my opinion, careless.

It was even more careless when they did it to him again in 1994...

That Rock & Roll figure was, in my opinion, pretty horrible. Between the pinkish skin, the very scraggly, short beard, and the facial wrinkles that made him look like he was about 80 years old... EEEESH!

Dee-Jay I actually liked.

I guess I didn't think the skin tone was that noticeable on mine. And I actually liked the short, scraggly beard and wrinkles. It was like they'd actually had him age over the years. I mean, in my mind when I was a kid, the '82 Joes were between 25 and 35 (probably owing to the fact that family members I knew in the military were in that age range, and because one of Grandma's big complaints about 'those war toys' was that they made the soldiers seem like 'old men' than the 'boys' that real soldiers were. Old men to me at the time would've been at least 30.) Then when this new version of RnR came out 7 years later, he looked 7 years older than the original. That was one of the coolest things about the figure, to me.

Yeah, I thought it was cool, too. Think about Rock'n Roll being a natural blonde and being a surfer, he's gonna get crow's feet and age prematurely from all that sun.

Dee-Jay: Terrible mold other than the head. Terrible accessories (Subwoofers on a back pack), and terrible colors.

Agreed, except that I think the torso and arms are not terrible (the legs, however, are atrociously bad). Unfortunately, I think Dee-Jay is one of the worst Joe figures ever.
