I think even most of the new armored vehicle they're getting in to replace the Humvees are all based on the same chassis, to minimize the different parts and tools required, even between the two and three axle variants.

For the record, the Vamp is based more on the XR311, (AKA GI Hotrod) that the Cheetah was also based on. The Vamp got the Cheetah's body style, but otherwise seems to have the 311's basic planform and profile, including being a two seater.
I think maybe the designers saw this commercial for the remote control models and combined the designs.

It'd be nice if someone made a yojoe type of comprehensive site that documents all vehicles of G.I.Joe and has a database on where they came from. Not just a hand full but really dig into all of it. I wanted to try and put one together many years ago and I know a few others started to as well. It's just nothing has fully come about yet.

That is because it is hard to do. Even looking at the VAMP we still have to kind of guess at what their inspiration was. You could ask Ron Rudat, Kirk Bozigian, or other vehicle designers what their inspiration was, but at this point they are 20-30 years removed from those projects. To complicate matters the designers took elements from everything from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars right up to the Cold War and then took it one step further by looking at prototype weapons and vehicles that never saw the light of day. You could spend a life time trying to track all that information down.

If a fairly comprehensive list could be gather from various sources, is there anyone that wants to compile a list? Maybe if nothing the JoeCustoms wiki? I might be able to get some emails out to get what can be gotten from who I can email. Others that know people I don't know could get some emails out too. It could be a cool "group project" to do.

Since GI Joe borrows it inspirations from real worlds stuff I think we might see the things that are going to be common to real world vehicles.

Using the same chassis and parts is popular because it means less parts you have to take into the field for repairs or if worse really comes to worse you can take the good parts from damaged vehicles to repair less damaged ones.

Gas hybrid is getting a lot of buzz since the electric motors allow a vehicle to sneak up like a gas or diesel vehicle could never do but the gas option gives the vehicle greater range than an all electric vehicle.

V-hulls and better armor should become more common since the flat bottom vehicles have encountered so many problems. Just a guess but given the urban warfare in cities with narrow streets I'm guessing the vehicles will start coming in a bit narrower than they are now.

Weapons systems well heck the sky is really the limit at this point with so many different systems in development from the lethal to non lethal system. They showed a fully automatic shotgun mounted on a military show that would really be kick ass on a GI Joe toy.

J-Man, I had writen up a bunch of stuff on different Joe vehicles and their real world counter parts for a different Joe fan site. I only posted one there because no one seemed too interested in it, but I think I've still got the other write-ups I had done.

http://gijoecostumers.proboards.com/ind ... thread=438

Granted it was just that; a comparison of the Joe vehicle and it's real world counter part, I wasn't basing anything off of inspiration or any information from the original Joe vehicle designer.

If you get something going, I can help you out.
