I recived my copy last night in the mail (yay for subscriptions). This first issue included the 10 pages of the comic that were already previewed. Lot's of adds for other IDW books yada yada yada....

The good stuff:

Some of the changes I like and some I don't, but I'm gonna wait to pass judgment on the book untill after my six issue subscription.

Sounds like this is a team that we're gonna wish for "Fumbles" to take out. Anybody see the new Robot Chicken?

New continuity.

I enjoyed the first issue very much.

So how's that work in conjunction with Hama's title? Are they seperate continuities, or is he tailoring his book to someday meat up with this one? Cuz that seems like it would be sort of a pain to lay the proper groundwork for a different writer's work in an ongoing title.

SPOILERS:

What it looks like is Larry had very definite ideas of where he wants the characters to end up. The main series happens a few years later, with the requisite changes in status quo and character relations that most comic companies use the dreaded "One Year Later" trope to explain away. With Andy editing, it seems like ideas are being thrown back and forth. On the one hand, Larry will have to keep his story consistant with what Dixon writes, but on the other hand, Larry seems to have gotten a lot of "say" in how everything is playing out in both books, so his own stories shouldn't need to "conform" so much as stay within the confines he's helped create for the title.

So while the end of Origins will likely not but up against the start of GIJoe flush and happy, it *is* the backstory for that title. It also seems that Duke and Scarlett will have a closeness in Origins, the fallout of which we're seeing in the Dixon title. So it'll probably be very tight, at least for the first few years. Let's see how long the current creative teams last before we worry about continuity getting hazy.

I'm pretty sure they call him Airtight in the very last panel. Because there would be no other way I knew who that was haha.

I don't like the new Dial Tone. I don't like change.

I hope that Skidmark is hanging out somewhere since the Desert Fox was there.

The book's good. Good mix of the military terms that Hama would throw around along with pretty good dialogue.

I wonder if 'classic' Dial-Tone will show up in Origins and then suffer an untimely demise or if "Starbuck-syndrome" Dial-Tone is all we'll be getting? I don't yet see what added value we get from femme-ing DT, but I'm willing to see what Chuck has in store.

While I liked the fact that everyone wasn't wearing their 'operational gear' (ie figure costumes) around the Pit and the dive team all wore the same dive suit, I wonder if that's doing them a slight disservice in individualising the characters at such an early stage of the series. I did like that those that we did see 'suited up' (Duke, Hawk, Snake-Eyes) were still pretty faithful to the classic styles or acceptable updated (Scarlett).

Overall, it felt like a GI Joe comic (much more so than some of the DDP ones) which is a very good thing and puts me onboard for the foreseeable future. Don't know that they'll ever displace the marvel series as 'my' continuity, but I'll give them a chance based on this solid start.

Agree with ajaman. A female DT sucks (no offense to the gals). I wish they still had him in v1. The moustache rocked. :)

If you're curious about some of the things in G.I.Joe #1, check out the latest episode of the G.I.Joe Review podcast. We interview Andy Schmidt, editor of IDW's G.I.Joe books. He address lots of questions, including why Dial Tone is now a girl.
