The thing with Mainframe's computer and Firefly's walkie talkie is that they are so outdated for their purppose that they actually work for the next wave of modern technology. Firefly's walkie talkie was an ok phone in the 80's and 90's, but now it works even better as a satellite phone which is much larger than the typical cell phone. Those aren't floppy disks on Mainframe's computer anymore, those are DVD r/w super drives and USB ports. You have to remember too, he isn't just trying to send out an email or check his My Space page in an airport. If he's on that thing he is probably trying to do one of the following: data system download, system command takeover, upload a virus, or protect against any or all of these things and probably somewhere without optimal wireless modem coverage. To do those sorts of things you need tons of memory and a lot of hard rive drive speed. Two areas where laptops are lacking.

The only items I never, ever have a use for are the neon colored weapons. I have them in a drawer in one of those screw drawer organziers and realized a couple fo days ago while looking for something that I never go in that drawer. Even with sound attack I've been able to cut the pegs off or use parts of the for custom weapons. The missile launchers don't get a lot of use but every once in a while I've been able to find uses for them because they have some great details molded onto them.

Got to agree with Pluv here. I see Mainframes computer also having a satelite uplink attached to it. Got to get service somehow, I can see a small mini dish pop up on it and search for a satelite to link up with.

The only backpack I really chuck now is the SAW Viper one, I have had more then enough of that one!

Ditto to pluv's thinking.

No law says you have to use an accessory for the purpose it was created. I was planning to use MainFrame's computer as some sort of antiquated medical facility computer.

Aside from most of the neons, any weapon or accessory can be refashioned into something else, with a little imagination. Heck, even the neon pistols and knives have their place, as training weapons for a dojo or other martial art training facility. I know some of the ones I have been to use the neon or flat yellow knives and pistols for disarming techniques.

so, in your opinion, Firefly's phone is something akin to a pair of bellbottoms?

Oh, and another thing, the clips on the hiss 2 and the seat belts on the APC, tossed them both immediately, :)

Beach Head's unmasked head. He can use one head at a time and the head hole is too small for his neck peg.

lol I was going to ask if you'd sell them to me until I saw the part about the APC seat belts.

Like others have said, about the only accessories I don't use are the "gimmick" ones like neon guns, spring-loaded launchers, and sonic packs. The exception being Battle Corps Leatherneck's bazooka (I think that thing's pretty cool) and Sonic Fighters Lamprey's computer backpack.

I don't know how many guns I've replaced I've replaced with ones from Marauder. My caped Cobra Commander's yellow dart gun has been replaced with a Luger from an Indiana Jones figure. Next order from Marauder will replace that with a much better Luger. I also can't stand that oversized .45 mold that Hasbro packs in with every version of the Duke mold. Wave 9 Hawk had one, too. Those all get replaced with Marauder .45s. The only thing worse, is that stupid cartoon laser rifle.

I don't use wave 9 Hawk's backpack. It just doesn't look right on him. As much as I like that they included Freedom with Spirit, I don't actually use him for anything. Can't say I was real thrilled with having to mode Spirit's gun, so that he could hold it properly. Timber doesn't see a lot of use, either.

Firefly's walky talky, or what ever it's supposed to be will end up in storage most of the time, just because I don't want to lose it. I just see it as a computerized remote detonator. He can use it call up bombs he's already set up, and either set them off, or reprogram their timers.

I just got the Best Of DVD pack, and the first thing I did was remove the parachutes. I'm thinking about modifying the CLAW, so that it doesn't need the backpack peg.

I don't have a desire too use a figure with their original accesories, sometimes a figure benefits from new ones other times they don't. However I'll toss a gun if it falls in any of these categories:

Ugly design. Crankcase v1's gun doesn't do anything for me so I wouldn't use it.

Poor design. If it causes stress on a figure's hand it's gone

Way the hell outta scale: I don't care if 1982 Grunt's M-16 is too small, but S.A.W. Viper and Rock Viper v1,3 Rifles are ginormus and not worth using.

Does that mean you won't use Battle Corps Dial Tone's M60? ;)

I hate the 25th stands. I really do. Everyone has to bend their right knee to stand upright because of those molded raised Cobra emblems, and there is only one foot peg.

I'd vastly prefer if they just issued generic, undetailed stands with all the toys. Nor do I really need a name painted on every stand.

I'm in full agreement! Personalized stands for say, the first 25 figures in the 25th anniversary line is a nice little "collector" novelty, but it gets old fast - especially when you're army building. I think we all know what a BAT, Viper, EEL, Cobra Trooper, et. al. is.

Also the stands are opaque and quite large, so it takes up quite a bit of room. That's why I switched em out for those circular clear stands from pro-tech.

I have to go with pluv's thinking about Mainframe's computer.

I always looked at it as a cutting-edge military device that was put together to handle a wide variety of mission parameters and is constantly being upgraded to improve performance. If some new technology or software becomes available, it's added for field testing or test-bed stuff.

There is a precedent for JOEs with special computers. If you remember in one of the early Marvel stories, the JOEs assault a farmhouse that was suspected of being a Cobra facility. Breaker had a laptop that allowed him to download info from the Cobra computers.

I figure Mainframe's computer DOES have:
-extra drive slots (for the floppy discs) in case they are needed
-it's got a huge amount of accessories allowing the user to hook up to any type of computer system
-it's got the wi-fi, can communicate with satellites, has a crapload of memory, has the necessary gear to download/upload info supah fast, and has special security firewall programs that can block bad stuff coming in or can be downloaded into Cobra computers.

Basically you think about any movie that has somebody hacking a computer, downloading/uploading something important within a specific time, or blowing passed firewalls-this computer can do it.

I also used Firefly's phone as a satellite phone when it first came out. Given he's a mercenary specialist, he needs to be able to have a reliable means off communication so he can be reached for jobs. He could set off explosives with it, it is shielded so it won't accidently set off explosives, and it is data-encrypted for security.

As for accessories I don't use, that's a long list...

It was brought to my attention a while ago that Firefly's device is really a detonator. Think about it, there were no cell phones or walkies that small back then.

um, my gi joe themed walkie talkies "back then" were smaller than fireflys detonator - proportionaly.

Dude it was the 80s not the 50s hehe.

But it is proportional for one of those motorola cell phones of the day.

The unopened pack has the description of the accessories written on it - and it says:

Quote:
Includes demolition backpack, submachine gun, walkie-talkie

Not that you can't consider it a detonator or whatever you want it to be.

Hell, you could say it is a detenator device he designed himself that includes GPS, and the ability to tie into computers and phone lines to make untrackable calls or detonations from distant locations.

Personally I like to keep whatever weapons came with a figure with the figure - but I'll add extras I like as well. Mostly adding backpacks to figures that have none.
