So, today was my birthday, and as per usual, my wife gave me permission to go crazy buying-wise. So I went on a big loop around town. Not as much luck as last year, but I managed to get:

-25th Firebat
-SW 4-armed General Grievous (the new, awesome one)
-Last Crusade Indy
-Dark Knight Returns Batman/Bruce Wayne pack (needed for custom)
-Golden Compass Seraphina (needed for custom)
-Two MOC Crimson Venom Cycles (found them at a local liquidation store)

But the best part came at my last stop. I went by this local mom-and-pop sporting goods store that has always had a small toy section in the back. Being a small operation, they usually have toys from a few years back (just two or three) and decent prices (25th anniversary figures are $5 there). I almost didn't go in, but decided to stop for nostalgia sake (my mom always used to take me there on my birthdays to get GI Joe figures). So, I walk up to the peg where the 25th figures are, and this is what goes through my head:

:slice: "Hey, cool, they have the new 25th Slaughter's Marauder's Barbecue!"

:slice:....

:slice: "Wait...there's no 25th Slaughter's Marauder's Barbecue....."

Yes, I was, in fact, looking at a vintage figure. Turns out way, way back in the day, this figure slipped between two shelves and sat there until recently when they rearranged a few displays and found it. Not being a collectible store, they just threw it back onto the GI Joe peg (...and no, there were no others...trust me. I scoured that store like an SOS pad). The best part? It still had its price from back in the day. $2.98.

Now, obviously, the card is in pretty bad shape, so this isn't exactly an AFA piece, but there's something awesome to me about finding a vintage figure at the store I always bought my figures at as a child, and paying the same amount I did back then. I think I may keep this one MOC, just for nostalgia sake.

That's an awesome, unbelievable find, and yeah, I'd say keep it as is. The story is more interesting than the figure ever will be.

And considering the infamous fragility of Slaughter's Marauders, this guy might not last a day out of his safe haven.

Either way, Happy Birthday!

I think that is a great birthday story, man.

Well done, keep him in package, this one time, I'm all for MOC, :)

I agree on both counts. I'm usually one of the first to yell, "Free them from the plastic prison", but this guy is different. Out of package, you'll have a prestine figure that is neat but odd and more than likely going to break when a breeze passes. In the package, you have a neat looking piece with an interesting and nostalgic story behind it. What a great brithday find.

I'm reasonably sure that I actually had that dream.

The card looks fantastic for something that's been sitting somewhere for a long time...

Yes, great story. Thanks for sharing. I would agree to keep it MOC. Even with its card bend, its "Story" is more
valuable than just having a loose mint figure.

Great great story. The circumstances, the situation, everything is unreal, and something most people can only dream about. And I mean that literally, as I have had many dreams about finding vintage stuff in stores. I agree with everyone else, do not open it up, as it is now priceless. Put it in some type of case and maybe print out a note with the story on it.
Even more amazing is that it was from a store you used to go to. Who knows, at one point in time you may have actually looked at or touched that very figure.

I think we've all had that dream.

Great find, and a cool story. Happy birthday!

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes! Yeah, I'm definitely keeping it MOC. It's currently in a protective case hanging on my wall next to my other prized Joe possessions (my animated cells and original Slice artwork transparency). It seriously blew my mind seeing it there on the peg. I, too, have had the "finding vintage at retail" dream, and I had to convince myself what I was seeing was real.
