1998, all repaints, some of them in cool 3-packs.
Figures from Oktober Guard are not in.
Let everyone know what figure you like best (and please explain why)!

Well, I don't think I can fairly vote on this one, because it would be one of the Oktober Guard figures, Lt. Volga, whom I pretty much painted the prototype for on Hasbro's behalf (although the original colors were much closer to Daina), and ultimately came up with the name and file card for her. ;-)

I really never liked Shipwreck in scubagear, regardless of the paint job.

Torpedo and Heavy Duty were character I don't care one way or another for.
I thought Ace and Thunder's outfits were just too plain and a bit ugly.

That just leaves Wetsuit, who's got one of the most awesome color schemes he's ever been in.

I tend to agree. Shipwreck as a diver never worked for me. The 1998 Wet-Suit is quite impressive, colorwise!

Ace in gray is cool, but I voted for Heavy Duty. I like the mold and these colors are very good if you don't like the spots of lime green on the 1991 version (I like both versions, but I know some don't like "neon")

The '98 Joes aren't a great bunch. Even with the Oktober Guard figs included, they leave a lot to be desired. Ultimately, I went with Thunderwing because the green is a slightly different shade than is usual and he was visually distinctive for the time. The divers were good, but I hold the MTB Wet Suit mold as the best coloring and the '94 Shipwreck is just one of the best figures ever in the line. So, it's tough to rank either of them as the best of this year.

The Oktober Guard should have been included in this poll. Technically Joes, no, but Cobra is the mutal enemy for both.

I'm voting for the cool green Red Star (errr, Brekhov) here!

EDIT: Why did you include Big Bear in the 1992 poll and Red Star in the 1991 poll but NOT the 3-pack for 1998?

I almost forgot about that grey Ace recoloration of the original 1983 Ace. That was actually very impressive in my opinion!

I'm guessing because it is more of a single card vs multi-pack rather than the JOE vs non-JOE.

But then, wasn't Red Star released with both GIJOE and Cobra filecards?

I'm writting in the Oktober Guard pack as well. Very nice repaints that can be used for different characters other than what they were named.

-I use Volga as Volga
-Colonel Brekov becomes another character with a head swap
-Lt Gorky becomes a generic Border Troop

(Of course the International black Big Bear is another character too)

Yep. And in the Netherlands they weren't released as a different group, but more like SAS Big Ben. A guest among the Joes.

Anyway, I chose Lt. Gorky.
His body is perfect to create more Oktober Guard Troopers or other Russian soldiers.
Ace would be my second choice.

wait, the guy that made the poll voted for one of the three figures he left off the poll?

well then my second choice for a vote would be Torpedo. the OTHER Wet-Suit repaint in the 3-pack, in a much better color scheme than 1992 and 1993 figures.

that mullet was just as awesome in 1998 as it was '92

Wet-suit. It was cool figure in 86 and it was a nicer repaint in 98

Wet Suit looks really sharp, and would work really well as a night force version of him. I'm with Trekker and chaisawviper on the Shipwreck in diving gear. Never liked that either.

This is what I thought when i read this thread.
That Daina/Volga fig body is just too awesome for words. The head is fugly scary but if you take it off you have the base for a really awesome custom.

I have two (one of which JFAK helped me finish by painting the arms) and they are just awesome.
It was the single best part of that whole 98 lineup, thinking about it now in retrospect.

I really wish they would ask you and ESPECIALLY LIVEVIL to paint up a few prototypes for the line.
The figures would rule really hard.
