1991, unfortunately the springloaded crap and neon colours invade the line.......... But there are still a few nice figures and characters!
Sonic Fighters and Talking Battle Commanders are not in.
Let everyone know what figure you like best (and please explain why)!

Snake Eyes was the first Joe I bought when I started back up in 1991, so he has to be my choice

Grunt, Heavy Duty and Dusty are up there too

Snake Eyes.

Hate the character (now, anyway), but i love that '91 figure.

Wow, we are at '91 already, how the years seem to have flown by.

This was a tough year, but I really dug Red Star. We had never gotten an Oktober Guard, and this was the first attempt to even get close to it, so it was original and nicely executed.

Plus, wrist Gatlings? Super cool!

agreed, hard year to pick. and some of the spring loaded missiles sucked.

however, this was the year a few of them worked witht he uniforms, such as Mercer, Red Star, and Sci Fi.

however, the coolest Missile launcher combo was Heavy Duty (and this was the only heavy duty version I liked) So I had to go with him.

Low-Light and Red Star, another toss-up.

Absolutely no contest here for me whatsoever -- RED STAR! Finally, finally, the Oktober Guard was represented in the toy line.

Red Star actually first appeared in an episode during the first season of the DIC animated series, and I wondered if by some longshot we might actually get him as a figure.

Then, when the Sonic Fighters came out, they actually had little individual pictures of the 1991 lineup of figures on the backs of their cards. And there was RED STAR! I really haunted the toy stores in the coming months until I finally had him.

A very close second for me would be BIG BEN. I have a good friend who lives in England, and the idea of the British SAS becoming part of G.I.Joe appealed to me. Curiously, the figure was not released in England, but I made sure my friend in England got one, and when I visited him in 1992, my Big Ben went with me. Yes, my Big Ben figure has visited his homeland!

And while I can't say the same for my Red Star, or any other Oktober Guards, I did have a pen-pal for a time in the former Soviet republic of Latvia, when it was still part of the Soviet Union, and I sent him a Red Star and Big Bear. Not being an action figure collector himself, I don't think he quite knew what to do with them, but he sent me a nice small set of Soviet tin soldiers.

Agreed. His facepaint always made me relate him to Tunnel Rat, so as a team, they're unstoppable.

It's getting tougher and tougher to do these polls.

1991 was unique because we got three different representatives of non-USA military units:

-Big Ben (British SAS)
-Red Star (Oktober Guard)
-SkyMate (Australian SAS)

As for the rest of 1991 it seemed we got only four new characters (Big Ben, Heavy Duty, Red Star, and Tracker) and we got seven re-dos (Dusty, General Hawk, Grunt, Low-Light, Mercer, Sci-Fi, and Snake-Eyes).

For me I always use the v1 version to reflect the most iconic version of the character. Grunt will always be in the og13 BDUs, Dusty will always be in his helmet with the cloth, Low-Light will always be gray, Sci-Fi in his green, and Mercer in his mock Viper outfit.

Snake-Eyes either uses the v1, v2, or a combo of both, except for his winter togs. In a pinch he is in his tan dress uniform with the bandages or rubber mask.

Hawk is either v1 BDU, 1986 General Hawk, a modded v1 that has the og13 pants and a black commando sweater, or his Class A's (reporting to the Jugglers/Motor Pool Chaplain's Assistant Host).

In the end, Red Star has a slight edge over Big Ben for me.

Yeah, about the 1991 Snake-Eyes. My take on that -- best uniform design, worst color scheme. You want to do a cool version of that, track down the "Night Fighting Guile" figure from the Street Fighter movie line, that used the same mold, paint the little area of flesh around the neck area black, find a 1991 Snake-Eyes head, paint it black, paint the goggle lenses the color of your choice, and assemble. Quick and easy custom with darned impressive results.

Or just use the head from the Desert Patrol Squad, Winter Ops or HAS set -- no painting necessary ;-)

Agreed about the SE sculpt, it has pretty much the best physical presence of any RAH fig, imho - it looks the most like a well-proportioned warrior would really look.

But, this was really only between Big Ben, Gen Jetpack, and SciFi v2. I love all these figs, and their gear is all good, esp Hawk's and SciFi's. But, I hadda go with Gen Hawk as I've used his fig for more customs than the other two.

I went with Clean-Sweep. While he doesn’t really look all that military his hazard suit does look realistic, at least to my untrained eye, bright colors and all. It also helps that he comes with a removable hood. Removable gear is always a plus with me.
