Evil Dentist has street cred

I'm not a huge rap fan, but I was watching Letterman tonight (they had Kerri Walsh and Neil Patrick Harris on, both of whom are favorites of mine for very, very different reasons), and the musical guest was the rapper Nas. I was only barely listening to his performance, but something caught my ear, and a google search confirmed it. I won't post the full lyrics because they are rather political in nature, but if you're curious, the song is called Sly Fox, and here's what caught my attention:

Alas, I pieced together a custom just this morning that depletes my stock of Mindbender heads... Otherwise, I'd be on this one like it was Chick-Fil-A.

meh, big deal, so whoever writes from him made a nice pop culture reference, now we can all think "yay, nas is just like us" when really his extent of mindbender knowledge probably goes about as far as the four best words that rhyme with mindbender.

Now if Mos Def uses a joe refrence you can bet your bottom dollar he used to sit in his footie pjs eating his action stars while watching the cartoon.

Thats not new in rap you can take any rapper and find a reference to Gi joe or Transformers on their album. I started a thread way back on DD fourm about this at the time I had a 12 disc changer I was listing to a wide range of artis at the time and could not get through one album without a Gi Joe reference. Nas if you knew his background most likely had a Dr. Mindminder, rappers were children at one point, far as I can tell pro athletes never played with toys.

Ah yes, Nas....See, personally...the guy is a pinhead as far as a human goes...but i may download this song.

I listen to a lot of music...I have too..well I am forced to because I am a DJ. Rappers use a lot of pop culture references..and the thing is, I wouldn't be stunned if he has watched and episode lately or is into toys and the like.
