Um, technically there's been three previous Undertows. There was the original in 1990, the really hard to find blue one in 2000, and the "crimson" one in the BJ's set circa 2002.

But hey, this is easily the most impressive of the lot, and it's a good mold. I'd put it right behind the original Cobra Eel as far as "impressive diver" is concerned.

I very much look forward to the Club Undertow. :-D

That does look really, really cool. But I have to admit, I'd rather a figure mold we haven't seen since the relaunch of the line. Granted, Undertow was only used once and it's probably one of the better molds out there that was used, but looking at the Con sets, they have PLENTY of molds that haven't been used since the 90s.
This is my feeling exactly. There is a ton of stuff I'd rather see than an addition to a previously released set. I really don't see too many people army building this guy at $20 plus a pop either. Good looking figure, but it isn't enough for me to re-up with the club.

Honestly, I believe that this Undertow figure in the Con Set '05 colors is in response to requests that MC has received on their message boards for "additions to Con sets". I think our own General Hawk was the one who started the thread on the MC boards and specifically used Undertow as an example. So I applaud MasterCollector for listening to the fans (for once). It's one of the first direct cause-and-effect occurrences that I've seen from the club (other than the upcoming Dr. Venom release).

With regard to army building, I mentioned to Lanny that they should create an army builder version of this figure, since at the Con I observed considerable interest. So to protect the "uniqueness" of the club membership figure, they should just invert the color scheme (like they did with the Jungle Viper club vs. parachute figure) and sell it in a six-pack (at a lower price point per figure, since they have the mold and the colors, so most of the work is already done) to match the Iron Anvils. Lanny said he'd look into it.

I think its cool that theyre adding additional figures to the con sets (Too bad they wont agree to sell the individual set figues in the store rathar than at the cons)

Its kinda a mixed bag for me, I like the figure, but since I'm getting it free with my membership anyway, my likes and dislikes of the figure are kinda irelevant.

I've also heard it mentioned from time to time that the Iron Grenadiers are a particularly popular group, so extending that particular Convention Set is a logical progression. I'm sure we all recall the newsculpt Nullifier a couple of years ago (who, like the Jungle Viper, was recolored for that year's parachute drop).

I think it would have been [LASER BLAST] if they could have done an Anhialator. A figure that quite a few people like in spite of it's colors, but in good colors to win over the rest of us... Plus not a figure we've seen in forever...

So that figure mold is long lost, yes?

I kind of wish that the Joe Club would make individual characters (either old or new) for their free figure. Then they could produce an army builder figure each year. As is - they are producing an army builder, but the only way to get another one is to sign up for another membership - which I can understand from a business perspective, they potentially can sell more memberships for those that want more of the armybuilder. Unfortunately, an individual can only sign up for one membership. So in order to get more of the figures from the Club, you have to have other people sign up and then give you the figure.

I don't know...seems like to me that they could make more money by producing an affordable armybuilder figure (those MOTH figures were not affordable in my opinion) and just letting people buy as many as they wanted.

actually, you can buy the free membership figure sepeate. you get one free, and the others are usually available on the club store site a few weeks later.

...although, at 20 bucks a pop.. its an expensive army!

I remember Annihilator being mentioned as one of the proposed figures for the 2003 Python Patrol 6-pack, but that was probably just a placeholder name

Agreed. This should have been the color scheme for the very first Undertow. It just screams IG.

8-O Well, you can see that I've not been paying attention. Thanks for the info.

Hmmm -- an Annihilator in these colors. That wouldn't be bad. I always the headsculpt of that figure was a little strange, one of those where you wonder how in the world a human head could fit in there -- sort of the like the Track-Viper/Nitro-Viper. But if the molds exist, who knows? Might happen someday.

I am reminded of my favorite Annihilator story. When the figure first came out in 1989, I was checking my local Toys "R" Us. Might've been a Target, I really don't recall. Anyway, here's this little boy probably 5-6 years old, for whom the word "Annihilator" was probably a bit too much.

So he saw the Annihilator figure on the pegs, and he called out, "Hey, Mom, look -- Annie Hitler!"

I had to dismiss myself from the aisle in some haste... :rotfl:

I'll probably rejoin. I'm not too big into the Undertow figure since I don't have the convention set it goes with. But still, if anything I'll join to show my support for the fact that they showed the figure so soon. I'd like to see them do that more often.

That story Thomas was talking about reminded me of one I heard the other day. A kid was with his dad and they saw the Destro/Breaker comic pack. The kid insisted that he knew who Destro's enemy is. The dad asked who, he said "Gung Ho". He claims it says so on the package so he knows that who Destro fights. The whole time I'm thinking, "yep, I wish Hasbro could see what the new sculpt set with Gung Ho vs Destro is causing with kids. Some marketing ideas are not quite what they are cracked up to be." Apparently the dad's brother is a G.I.Joe fan and the kid probably either has seen his uncle's figures or his uncle has given this kid G.I.Joe figures for presents.
