I'm looking for a good source for 1:18 scale horses so i can make a slew of cavalry customs. I bought one of the new Indy horses, but I'm not crazy about the way it looks. I'm not super crazy about the PTE horse, either. Does anyone know of any other good sources? I'd rather have a realistic looking horse with little to no articulation than a highly articulated horse that looks like a crazy horse robot.

I think some of the Breyer horses are 1:18 scale. You may have to search around for them, though.

I can't remember if Target has them, put I know TRU occasionally gets some. If there is a tack shop around you, try there. I have several, and my only complaint is the plastic saddles aren't the greatest looking.

They might be hard to find, but there was an old west line in the 80's that had some of the best 1:18 horses ever. All i ever had was a wagon I got for my birthday, but the horses were fully articulated(all leg joints, head joint). I wish I could remember the name of the line(it wasn't the lone ranger, it was an off brand), or at least find what I still have to show you....

Well, if you are not interested in articulation, there is always Schleich and Papo. They do pVC figurines and both have realistic horses.

Way way back there was a lone ranger line that had some great horses, Zorro, Tonto and Butch Cassidy all had the same mold for thier horses but of course different colors. I would suppose that the only pace to find them would be evilbay now.

Lanard had some with their adventure packs (Aztec treasure?). no articulation, but good saddles and tack.

If he doesn't like the PTE horses, I can't imagine he'll do much better anywhere else.

thanks for all the suggestions, these are great. I saw some of teh schliech horses today, but i didn't have any figures to compare size with. i'll have to smuggle a joe in next time i go to Ben Franklin.
I think I used to have one of those lone ranger horses. They were awesome, the perfect blend of realistic sculpt and articulation. I'll dig through my old boxes of stuff to see if i can find it.

Teh Schleich and APpo horses are a little on the small side. Tehir figures are in the 3-3 1/2" range. Close but not quite. Breyer is probably your best bet. They make horses is all sizes and even the ones that are 1/18 compatable have good accessories.

You're looking for Paddock Pal Breyers. They're usually packed with figures. Tack shops, Target and Tractor Supply are good sources. I know Wal-Mart has the Traditional size horses but don't think they carry the Stablemates.

If you can find them, Chap Mei in the past had a nice cavalry horse which looked pretty good save for the oversized rifle holder.
