Someone had pointed it out a few days ago to me but now I have the newsletter I'm just more flabbergasted by it. Look at the titles on some of the pages. They've managed to misspell review and preview, REPEATEDLY, in eye-catching page titles. What's funnier is that later on in the newsletter, review gets the correct spelling.

I guess it's sad that MC is running such a tight budget that they can't afford page layout software with spell checking capabilities.

Maybe if some one had volunteered to spell check (like Troy), it wouldn't be a problem.

OK, I don't care at all about the club. But as a reporter I know it's very easy for silly spelling errors like that to make it into a printed product no matter how hard you try to prevent them.

It could be something as simple as forgetting to run the spell check function, or as complex as an old (unproofed) PDF going off to the printer on accident.

I'm sure they're pissed off enough about the error, they don't need anyone wagging their fingers at them.

This must be part of the "exclusive content" that club members are entitled to :-D

QFT. Kind of lame to chastise in public over something so insignificant. Having run a student paper in college mistakes will make it out no matter how diligent one is.

I think it stops being a typo when the word is repeatedly misspelled on the same page.

Didja run that paper as a for-profit company? Just like with comics, if something's costing me $3.95 per issue (as the newsletter is priced at under the word 'Master' on the front cover); I've got a right to gripe about my money being wasted on poor editing.

/Also, they list somethings called 'Auctons' on the table of contents.
//Also also, they don't number the b&w pages.
/// So the table of contents is *entirely* pointless because of that.
//// And why does the page numbering start at 1 with the color insert? Is it supposed to be a different magazine?
/////And why are there pics on the cover if they're not going to talk about them?

Those are all legitimate critiques.

And my point wasn't that you don't have the right to gripe, just that it seems silly to me when people are enraged by a misspelling in any publication.

I'm not enraged. But as a graphic designer/layout worker/proofreader, I'm insanely annoyed by it.

It's the most basic rule of all spelling: "I before E except after C." It was even a SONG in a Charlie Brown special. If they can't get THAT one right...

It's annoying, that's all. You shouldn't need a spellcheck to find something as basic as that.

Sorry, but it's not lame to point out an obvious error that's repeated in places that stand out when it's in something we pay for. It's at the top of multiple pages in a very eye-catching layout. It's spelled correctly on another page in the same placement.

It's minor, yes, but it's indicative of some of the way the club is run. It's supposed to be a business and this newsletter is one of *two* things you get with your membership. That they run this with such an obvious error, to me, shows the sort of attitude they take toward many other aspects of the club.

Just my two cents but I personally expect some attention to detail in items I've paid for.

As far as its indicative of how the Club does other things, I dig. I'm not a member and I'm not interested in being one.

And maybe that's why people are more peeved about spelling issues here than Hasbro's frak up on the "Counting Coup" comic in the Ace/Wild Weasel pack (they spelled it "Counting Coop").

For the record, spell check wouldn't have caught Hasbro's error.

By the way: if you're incensed by poor spelling... don't hire a lawyer. Egregious spelling is more common in legal briefs and opinions than any other written material.

Reveiw & Preveiw

"I before E is how it should be." - I learned that in grade 2.
