Post subject:  Sculpting Epoxy and Clay
Hey I was wondering what types of stuff people like to use. I know and use a few brands. I never seem to be able to keep up with all the strange names people through out. Or if I write it down I generally just loose the paper sometime between the puter and the store.

So let's get a list going. If you use something to sculpt something, anything, post it's brand name (price and location would be nice too). Maybe then we have a long list for source material.

Green Stuff is what most everyone uses try viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5069&p=57584&hilit=green+stuff#p57584 for location and such

I used the Mighty Putty from Walmart and Target for a fur collar on my artic Tele viper. It worked pretty well.

I've been using kneadtite eversince Chief's article on it during the Custom Celebration. He or Doc Rob who also uses it gave me a link to get online tha tI have since lost. I got a roll of it for $17 and have used maybe 4 inches of the tape so far. Thsi thing is going to last me a long, long time.

I also use Sculpey and FEMO. Both can be found at local craft stores or JoAnne Fabrics or Michaels. They are anywhere from $2-4 depending on the store and come ina variety of colors. Sculpey even has some flexable stuff that is perfect for hats.

I've looked into Apoxie Sculpt and Magisculpt because of the work done by Jin Satore and IronCow. Since I haven't been able to find any of that in any stores and I'd have to buy a fairly large quantity of either online I haven't pulled the trigger.

Just follow the "Buy It Here" for a list of places to find it. I paid $12 for the roll I bought, with shipping it came out to about $20 (yeah, shipping was high).

I love it--it's all but replaced Sculpey in my customizing.

One thing I have found, is careful how you store it--it tends to stiffen up if you leave it exposed to air. Doesn't harden per se, but does stiffen up a bit and can be hard to knead at first. One solution I found that works is to knead it together a bit, then dip it in water. Helps it to blend and softens it up a bit. (You shouldn't need to do this with fresh Kneadatite.)

I use milliput. Same as pluv, I've wanted to try Apoxie sculpt, but have had difficulty finding it locally.

Ive tried a ton, and my favorite is Apoxy sculpt. It has a long work time, and sets up great.

From the start for me, durability was key because kiddo was getting my customs to play with.

At first I stuck with what I could find locally, so I ended up using PC Marine Epoxy Putty from my local True Value. It was about $5 for a 2 oz roll in a tube and lasted me a long time. In comparing it with other similar stuff it had the longest working time (about 15 minutes give or take). The 2 part compound is rolled together, so you just have to slice it off the roll and knead it to activate it..so there's no guess work on the amounts to combine. It was quite sticky, but I found a little cornstarch on the figures helped until it was less sticky to handle. It does have a smell, but it wasn't overwhelming, and was ok to work with for sculpting. Once it started curing it was easier to work in finer details and it smoothed with water, tho not perfectly, and you could take a dremel to it really well. REALLY durable stuff!

After seeing Vengence's work on JBL, I decided to finally try Apoxie. I got it from http://www.sculptingstudio.com. I think there was a special at the time, but I got a total of 4 oz of Apoxie and a bottle of solution for smoothing and cleanup shipped to me for around $12. Even with all the goof ups and experimenting I've done so far, it'll last a LONG time. The compounds come in 2 separate containers so you have to approximate equal amounts, but that's not a huge hassle. I'm really only beginning to get the hang of using it (and would love any tips!), but the working time is outrageous. I've been able to work on something for up to an hour or more and then I can come back a little later and tweak the details if I want. I've found I can get much better lines and details with this stuff, and it seems to blend seamlessly with the plastic, which the PC Marine didn't quite do because it has larger particles. It also doesn't have a bad smell (if you don't mind the scent of corn chips). Dremels and smooths really nicely. Seems like it'll be as durable, or more, than the PC Marine.

Main reason I haven't tried anything else is that I bought 5 lbs in 2002/2003 and have only used half of it. I guess I'll use it for the next 5 years then go from there.

I used Locktight (in the expoy/glue isle at any hardware store) it sets up in five minutes. Very sticky but its cheap. 5.00 for a tube about five inches long. The working life makes it only useful for filling in large areas though.


Also mathew what was the sryene stuff you were talking about?

Styrene is plastic you can buy in sheets, rods, etc.

For Rent/For Sale/Garage Sale/etc. signs are also a great source for styrene. It's just plain sheets, of course, none of the specialized pieces that evergreen makes, but if that's all you need, it's a ton cheaper.

Actually my Green Stuff lost any smell it had--storing it like I do probably didn't help. Procreate looks pretty good but I've got a good 2 feet of Green Stuff still to go...


By the way, an added question to the thread: what do you most of you guys use to sculpt in the way of tools?

I picked up set of clay modeling tools at Michaels to work mine but half the time just end up using my X-acto (since I use it heavily to mold hair). Still the set is nice to have, especially for molding very small areas, like straps or ears.

I use a broken-tipped Xacto for most of it. That, or there's this Chap Mei spear that has a great tip for sculpting.

I use a combination of small xcato blades and an xcato spear.I also found a four way pen, pencil, marker, and pointer. The pen ran out and so I torn it apart for the pointer and to make who knows what else. For larger jobs I have a wood set that is used for regular potty. Nice and smooth, but really much to large for this size of figures.

I have had my eye on what Rob uses for sometime.
