Post subject:  need help with a codename

I have a custom WIP and I'm having difficulty finding a suitable name for him.

He is a Green Beret who is gonna be the Unconventional Warfare Advisor to the original 13 JOEs. He may or may not be an active JOE, he might be more along the lines of how Shooter was portrayed.

This first started as a was to augment the early JOEs based on the scene from the very first Marvel issue where all the computer screens were up. General Flagg picked the 13 we know as the first 13.

There are already several early JOEs with codenames starting with 'S'. I also have another one, but am trying to find something different for the Green Beret. I can't use 'Snake-Eater' because that's too close to Snake-Eyes.

I was gonna work in 'Robin Sage' as part of his name somehow.

If anyone has ever read the "Tales of the Green Beret" comic book series or the b & w mass market paper back version-that is the look of the character.

He is a Viet Nam vet and I want him to be a NCO. Maybe he is an instructor at Ft. Benning who helps out.

Any help appreciated.

"Gunny", short for Gunnery Sergeant.

From the wiki:
Quote:
Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt) is the seventh enlisted rank in the United States Marine Corps, just above staff sergeant and below master sergeant and first sergeant, and is a staff non-commissioned officer. It has a pay grade of E-7.

A gunnery sergeant in the infantry is typically in charge of a company-sized group of Marines, or about one hundred personnel. A U.S. Army Sergeant First Class shares the same pay grade as a Gunnery Sergeant, but not the same responsibilities.

Gunnery sergeants are commonly referred to by the informal abbreviation "gunny." This nickname is usually regarded as a title of esteem and/or cameraderie, and is generally acceptable for use in all situations except formal and ceremonial ones. Use of the term by lower-ranking personnel, however, remains at the gunnery sergeant's discretion.

The rank became infamous after R. Lee Ermey's iconic portrayal of one in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.

Battleground

Gunny wouldn't work because the Green Berets are Army, not Marine Corps.

Battleground might be a confusing name due to the fact it refers to a location.

Dark Jedi's first rule of naming customs: "Never name a character with a codename that can confused with a command indicating immediate action (ie-Bolter or Wave-Off) or a codename that would cause confusion if used in radio communication."

I wanna have a name that goes with what the Green Berets did in 'Nam-working with the Hill people, real in the field type of name.

I did use placeholder names like Boondock, Boonie, and Mangrove, but am just looking for that 'right' name.

Is there a reason he has to be a Green Beret?

Yes, AV, the reason he is a Green Beret is because of the Soldier Force headsculpt.

That would be a good one...if I didn't already have a character named 'Bulldog'.

Please keep the suggestions coming though!

(and I'll have to rethink the Bulldog one)

Liberator - the Army Special Forces Motto is "To Liberate the Oppressed".

Sattle - After Barry Sadler, the writer of Ballad of the Green Beret song.

Sage Buster - in reference to the Special Forces Robin Sage exercise which is the final exam for canidates. Basically this would mean your guy blew through this exercise with no dificulty at all.

Gorilla - a play on the word guerilla which is the type of warfare Green Berets use and teach

Silverback - another play on words here after the alpha male of gorillas.
