The last few years, I've discovered that I've had more figures "build themselves"- meaning that they're the byproducts of other figures that I've parted together and realized that not-quite-randomly assembled parts sometimes really click.

How often does this happen to you?

I assume that most of us store are fodder figures as entire figures, with a new head or arms or legs replacing ones taken away for a custom. But it also occurred to me that maybe some people store the parts as parts. A jar of heads. A container of arms. How does everyone store parts?

I store parts as parts. Occasionally I'll find a partial combo, usually head and torso, that I like, but nothing else is clicking. So I'll leave that combo in the arms drawer to remind myself to try other sets of arms as they come in.

I think what you're talking about happens more often when I'm fiddling with something or playing around with figures on the workbench. For instance I have BFS mage body on the workbench, naked torso, tan pants, boots, along with a headless MTF body. I use them to test size and neck ball depths for new head casts as they come in. Everyonce in a while, just fiddling around testing different stuff...it just works.

I suppose I'm 80% Frankensteins in the fodder boxes, which become more and more Frankensteined as they get parts pulled and replaced.

The other 20% are loose parts in parts bins. Stuff like the tiny hands chopped off NS figures or factory heads replaced with cast ones. Often the parts that are so bad I'd be unlikely to use them on another figure down the road.

Oh, I have a whole other box for limbs and parts of limbs. :shifty:

Here are a few examples of what I was talking about.

I converted this Corps ball neck head to fit modern figures in 2008. At some point I got the A-wing pilot and used the head for a different custom. I started using the body to test Star Wars heads with the bigger neckball socket. Then drbindy convinced me to try some of the Lego aqua bowls (originally from Sally in a Sponge Bob set). Plopped the head on the body, put the diver bowl on and instant space man custom.

Barbarella here started out with kilcarr and I talking about using the BFS blank without the lower torso as a cyborg. It turned out that the inverse of those parts was instantly Barbarella. Plopped the Mara Jade head on and it was off to the races.

So, here’s something that happens to me a lot too, customs for my customs. As I’m finishing up a custom, I start thinking of the shots I want to take to showcase it. Sometimes that means making a quick custom figure if I don’t quite have something that already fits. And sometimes those quick customs turn into straight up customs in their own right.

Made the giant, but wanted Inigo and Vizzini to go with him. The only work on either of them was the heads.

And don’t even get me started on the number of customs I’ve made just to prove how easy they would be to someone else.

i have figures in somewhat ordered shoebox size containers with modern joe, oring joe/corpse, and other. then i have a similar box with bags of lesser parts torso, arm. legs.

in my primary box (a plano 3 tier deluxe tacklebox) i have a large clear tray of heads (full to the brim), a large tray of modern/other parts, and a large tray of o-ring/other parts. the top opening tray is great for paint.

then i have 5 other shoeboxes labeled "fantasy, fantasy knights, animals, wearables, accesories". then we get into larger boxes of parts/projects/ and maybe i'll use this hoarder stuff.

getting my own hobby room really showed me how much jink i have!

eta: i also have small tier boxes with women figures/parts, wrestling, and bmx bikes. a large plano type box with heat shrink, one with my best accessories (weapons, vests, hats/helmets), and a slimmer one with just guns.

a closet stacked with boxes labeled "dio, castle, rc car, packaging, found items, etc."

plus i'm sure i've forgotten some squirreled away boxes!
