I want to make BBQ a vehicle, so I've settled on turning a Road Rebel into a USS Flagg based fire truck. The obknoxious missile launcher will serve as a foam gun.

http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/03/roadrebel/left.shtml

So my current predicament is deciding the color scheme. If I paint it solid red then anywhere I try to paint lights will blend in with the body paint - and what's a fire truck without lights!? I could, like on many firetrucks, paint the top black or white with the sides red. That would allow the lights to show up, but I'm not crazy about how it would look. I'm also considering the lime yellow look which is more common to air fields.

Another consideration is Barbecue himself. Since he inspired this project I don't want to paint the vehicle a color that clashes with his orange suit.

Anyway, any thoughts?

Interesting side note, I've already dissassembled (sp - dream?) my Road Rebel, and on the sticker with the gauges - the fuel is on "E" - what's Hasbro trying to do with GI Joe!? No wonder Cobra's ranks increase every year - GI Joe can't fight them on empty fuel tanks!

Go yellow with orange trim. Then the lights would show up and it would still compliment his uniform while looking "official" at the same time.

Military fire vehicles are sometimes red, but I've seen a lot more yellow (mostly neon yellow, like some civilian trucks.)

i'm rather partial to the white one.

could you ditch that gun entirely? i know you thought it could be used as a hose, but it is really obnoxious.

i'd also recommend trying to find one of those old fisher price ambulance/rescue vehicles for parts -- they came with a telescoping bucket...

First I admire your decision to use the Road Rebel as a fire truck. That's thinking outside the box.

Secondly when you state you have seen pictures of fire trucks with various color schemes, the important thing to remember is some of those schemes are city-specific. The NYFD, Chicago, and many other Fire Departments around the country have rather unique styles that one can instantly ID as what city. My brother could go into detail about this, but right of the bat I believe the black roofed trucks are Chicago. Those that collect and customize the Corgi and other brands of fire trucks can ID a specific city like we can ID something that is Hasbro/Lanard/etc.

Why don't you google (here we go again) :D the Boston Fire Department and use key words such as 'fire trucks', 'apparatus', etc and give a more fitting color scheme to Barbacue since he was part of the Boston Fire Department and comes from a long tradition of service there. That's what I'd do.

The only other option would be to check out reference pics of actual NAVY flight decks to see what the equipment is painted. Is it battleship gray? Is it hazard yellow? Is it red? Traditional NAVY colors?

This could give you a starting point.

Also since we never really know what the USS Flagg's home port is, it's possible to use a paint scheme that comes from the home port city. Say if it is Miami, then google Miami FD...

But Cjack and I have conversed in PMs to discuss this, so I'm fairly certain it won't be a problem this time.

After all, a different approach through something initially disgarded as unlikely might result in different options. (ie-different search parameters)

8-O Even though nothing unkind was said, why do I still feel ganged up on? 8-O

DJ, Thank you very much for the idea of tieing the paint job in with Barbecue's hometown of Boston or a home port, that's a neat idea, I can see a backstory - GI Joe uses experimental weapons, so Barbecue appeals for the right to develop his own experimental fire fighting equipment, in helping design it he includes some elements that remind him of home like the Boston FD's color scheme (and a camera to spy on the other units fire-fighter's call signs :-P )

I did. See the photos in the first post? The middle photo (white with red stripe) is a "fire truck" from an aircraft carrier.

Thanks Again,

CJack

Do carrier firefighters wear a special colored vest like the deck crews wear? If so I'd paint it that color so they match.

Or paint it to match the other Flagg mini vehicles and just spice it up with some red or fire engine yellow to show its specialty.

yellow for officers and aircraft directors
purple for fuel handlers
green for catapult and arresting gear crews
blue for tractor drivers
brown for chock and chain runners
RED for crash and salvage teams and the ordnance handlers.

I just picked up some nifty decals at the local hobby store and I'm going to let the decals direct the paint job of Barbecue's Road Rebel Fire Truck - its going to be white and barbecue reddish orange. A far cry from the direction I was originally going, but I think its going to look impressive.

Thanks for all your input guys!

:rotfl: [sob_emotional_rambling]

Now you know how I felt after trying to give honest and genuine assistance and having it thrown back into my face and being dissed publically on the board in front of my peers and made to feel inseconseq...

[/sob_emotional_rambling] :rotfl:

I couldn't say that with a straight face, Cjack. ;)

Don't worry about it. We're fine, we're all fine here, how are you?

Glad I could help. Once you mentioned Barbacue as a starting point, paying homage to his hometown and his family's tradition of service-it just seemed like the right way to go.

You lost me with this statement...

Why would Barbacue need to spy on other units? If this vehicle is on the Flagg, then he would be part of the Aircraft/Aircrew CFR contingent and working side by side. I could see a camera used to locate humans like real firefighters do (to pinpoint hot spots or victims). Please explain.

I figured it was actual NAVY, I just wasn't sure it was the standard across the board or if there were unique paint jobs to reflect the different fighter wings (ie-different ships).

Can't wait to see the final product.
