I realize this is JOECUSTOMS, but I'm planning on a MLP custom for my wife.

She has black hair, so I'd like the MLP to have black hair as well. I haven't tried this yet, but do you think the hair would die, or perhaps throw another idea out for coloring the hair?

I'm looking at this right now to kinda 'warm up'.

John, you really are the most qualified guy here to talk about diying your hair and painting your nails. Do you really have to ask this? :shifty:

I suppose you could bleach the hair and then buy a hair die kit. Maybe?

Yea, I don't know if actual hair dye will work on that toy hair, but isn't there some kind of dye you apply with a brush thing? I'd try that, as I don't know if regular Rit dye will work, since you'd pretty much have to get the whole head/ass in the dye to completely get the hair. Which may not be an issue if you are going to paint the thing...

Wow, that entire paragraph was a whole bunch of nothing, wasn't it?

I haven't done an MLP, but I've dyed a "Horse Friend" which is a similar knockoff. Black works well on any base color except white and bright yellow, but make sure that you use RYT and not a knock off. You have to make the dye really concentrated, but you will get black hair.

The biggest issue is dying right down to the roots without dying the soft plastic that it's attached too. Also that plastic, when hot, seems to give up the hair too easily, so you might end up with bald patches. The plastic dyes really easily, as it's super soft so you can't touch the plastic at all.

As for dying it with actual hair dye, forget it, unless you can find wig dye. It's just plastic, and completely different from hair.

Also if you're doing a cutie mark, keep in mind that the plastic doesn't take waterslides well for some reason.

Good luck and let me know how it works out.

I got into MLP "customizing" to try to get some of the knock off ponies that my daughter got for her birthday to actually stand up straight using hot water to modify the legs. It didn't work.

The dying thing was also not completely successful, but I think I might try an all black "apocolypse pony" at some time in the future.
