PM Chief and ask him how he does it would be my best advice then.

I still haven't tried that method yet -- all I've done is jam a screwdriver into the armpit of a Roadblock and pry him apart - it wasn't pretty :(

I *still* think this official method is the absolute stupidest thing I've ever heard. It's also not gonna be of any help with figs like Serpentor that don't have an armpit divot of any significant depth. I just turn the chest 90 degrees, and work my x-acto up the seam using the spine on the abdomen to get leverage. Works every time and I don't have to go to the lumber yard and explain why I need a 1-cubic-inch cube of wood. Plus, I've yet to have run into the risk of whacking my figure's entire neck off like Richard the Designer warned against at the Con.

Basically you just turn the upper body so that the arms face the front and back of the figure. Then you put the corner of a wooden block in the small divot under the arm and whack the shoulder on the other side next to the neck post. Some of the newer figures like Serpentor don't have as pronounced a divot, but there's enough there that the block can split it. 2 or 3 good smacks and it falls into 2 pieces. Just be sure not to hit the neck post or it might break off.

This method sounds crazy but works really REALLY well. I've done if a few times now and it's amazingly easy as opposed to something like trying to pry it open with an exacto or a screwdriver or something. I tried that with a Storm Shadow and screwed the whole torso up and carved a nice notch in my index finger. Much easier and cleaner to just pop it a couple times with a hammer. Unless you just want to do it the hard way :)

Right on, right on. Do what works for you. I just don't see how forcing people to go buy lumber and a mallet to do a completely new way of simply taking a figure apart while running the risk of busting the neck off completely can be defined as 'customizer friendly'. I'll stick to the methodologies I've long since mastered working on RAH ArmorTech and SW figs.

Basic tutorial for torso separation:

Today's subject is diaper crotch Firefly
Image

Image

Firefly's harness comes off easily. The separation is in the back where the pack plugs in. Just use your knife to grab an edge and pull up.
Image

Pop the head off
Image

Twist the upper torso 90 degs. with one arm forward and one back.
Image

Notice the indention under the arm. That's where the point of the wood goes. I use the corner of my work table--it's the same thing.
Image

With the indention over the wooden point, whack the shoulder with your mallet.
Image

Your figure will separate easily and look like this.
Image

To put it back together, just add a little super glue on the seams.

From your pics, this method doesn't seem to keep the internal engineering of the chest from breaking pins off into their corresponding holes any more than the x-acto method. So, from your pics, the official method does not one single solitary thing an x-acto does - except raise the risk of breaking the neck off entirely as Richard the Designer said himself at the Con.

And I'll have you know I only have one chin, thank you very much!

Wait: Diaper crotch Firefly? I thought all Firefly's had the new design crotch?

Son of a [LASER BLAST]. ANOTHER variant.
