I've done some more pondering and have looked through my copy of "A Dictionary of Soldier Talk: Definitions and Origins of Army Words and Phrases, Both Official and Slang, from the Revolution to the Present Plus an Appendix of Navy and Marine Terms" to find something suitable.

I think I might go with 'Caisson' right now as a placeholder. Given he might be a Viet Nam Vet, it could also be a play on Khe Sanh. Maybe he was in the Marines while in 'Nam and then transferred to the Army?

While most people think a caisson is the device used in building bridges, it has many definitions. The Army used caissons from the early 19th century to WWII as a vehicle transporting artillery ammo. You might be familiar with the song, "The Caisson Song" (aka "...over Hill, over Dale..." / "The Field Artillery Song")


Hmmmm....'Dale Hill'....might be a filename right there. I wonder if he's in Artillery?

I have found a few more possible Green Beret names I like:

-Venture (undertaking involving chance, risk, and danger; proceed despite danger)
-Brand (a class of goods identified as the product of a single firm or manufacturer)
-Rook (based on the chess description-kinda sounds like what a Unconventional Warfare person would do)

Instead of Rook, how about Bishop? They are considered to be like tacticians.
