Post subject:  Kowalski's Custom Reruns: Beachhead

Another one from 2002-ish. Sometimes I get drunk at dinner parties and find myself sidling up to a stranger and they say, "hi, I'm Glenn!" And I lean in uncomfortably close and stage-whisper "I'm the guy who gave Beachhead his mustache." And they say, "excuse me?" And I just nod conspiratorially and wobble a bit. And then they walk away and my wife reconsiders her life choices.

All that to say, I'm the guy who gave Beachhead his mustache.

The proof?

You know something, you might just be right about being the guy who gave Beachhead his mustache. We all know that Hasbro has lurked in GI Joe customs forums for years to get ideas. :shifty:

Giving an unmasked Beachhead a mustache was cool but what I especially like about this custom is what you did with Downtown's torso. I always thought his torso was rather undesirable for custom use but what you've done with the extra sculpting on it made it so much better and made me see its potential...

This custom has popped into my head multiple times over the 20(!) years since you first posted it. Beyond the mustache (a creative decision which deserves any and all praise it has received), it was the very subtle way you managed to incorporate the features that define the original figure, but updated them for the modern era. Ribbed sweater? Try a pullover instead. Brown camo pants? How about some brown-ish pants that look like something a dude would actually wear on a mission. Vest full of pockets? Here, have some much cooler webgear full of pockets. It hit all the essential notes while feeling fresh and new. And it still does. When someone says Beachhead, this is one of the images that flashes into my mind.

not to forget, but even that crankcase's head is the same shape as beachhead's, it's like it was made to be his head for that custom.

Thanks, everybody! It's been a lot of fun revisiting these old customs.

Thanks! Even as a kid I was pretty particular about proportions. Glad that comes through.

I do believe I've seen more than a few nods to your work sneak into official Hasbro designs over the years.

As ever, your praise means a great deal to me. I'm proud to hear that my work left an impression.

Right? I feel like there's a similarity in the eyes/eye brows, as well. (Also, great to see you're still hanging around!)
