In the decades leading up to the Clone Wars, the most popular model of construction/demolition labor droids was the Techno Union's DD-9 model. Due to their superior engineering and reliability, they could be found working jobsites all acros the galaxy. While initially quite pricey due to their chromex outer plating, you could not buy a better labor droid. Most buyers would promptly strip off their gleaming chromex outer plating and sell it to recoup some of the initial outlay for the droids, resulting in the DD-9's more familiar skeletal apearance as their chasis and hydraulics were now exposed.

DD-9s are so well engineered that they wil run forever if they are properly maintained, which aside from their precision workmanship on the jobsite was their highest draw for buyers. The only real downside to woring with the DD-9s was their severely limited AI for anything not directly related to their assigned jobs resulting in their more common nickname "Dum-Dums".

The biggest setback to the DD-9 program came in the waning years of the Clone Wars when the Techno Union activated deeply bried programming within the DD-9s that caused these highly skilled laborers to become ruthless killing machines. The DD-9s turned their tools against helpless citizens on Republic worlds all across the galaxy, with a death toll in the millios. The sneak attack against the innocent citizens of the Republic was thwarted when rogue Corellian Jedi Tilson Ral and his Quarren partner Lekkes Nort captured the main Techno Union control vessel and broadcast a dectivation signal to every DD-9 unit in the galaxy. This incident is considered the worst terror attack in the history of the galaxy.

After the Clone Wars ended, a salvage company cheaply bought up all of the deactivated DD-9s across the galaxy for refit and resale. Even after memory wipes were completed, it was a hard sell to get anyone to trust the once killer machines. The salvage company even painted up every DD-9 unit in bright cheeful colors to highlight that the machines were now safe and ready to work again. As none of the civilized worlds in the Core or Mid Rim would even touch the tainted machines, the salvage company ended up selling all of the units at a huge loss to the poor worlds in the Outer Rim.

Even with complete memory wipes, you will still find foremen across the Outer Rim that will tell you that every time they look into that black, souless photoreceptor, they see a slumbering killer looking back at them....

I included this WIP pic (before green areas were weathered) as I find it funny how much this figure looks like one of the glow-in-the-dark "Batman: Mission Masters 3" figures from a couple of years ago! :)
