Tetsuo Ika was born in Sacramento to Johnny Ika, the man who would later became known as DECIMATOR. As a boy, he went on various outdoors with his father...an experienced outdoors man. A troubled student, after high school his father encouraged him to join COBRA because Cobra Commander was a good friend of the families.

Tetsuo, a life long boyscout was initially assigned as a Sludge-viper. He moved up in ranks that other vipers could have only dreamt of. Cesspool stated, "The boy simply didn't mind, but he knew how to spread our chemical agents perfectly".....It was from these experiments that Black Death was born due to his experiments with Dr. Mindbenders "zombie plague" formula.

When Tetsuo wasn't camping...He was part of Major Bludd Jr. Cobra weekend "range viper" scouting troop...Where he would meet the other six range vipers who would become the backbone of the Deaths Head. The seven of them bonded and became great friends...all were from diverse backgrounds and were the top of their class when it came to the range vipers. Little did they know that their affliation with Cobra would cost them more than the disrespect of their fellow men.

After learning of Cobra's deception of DECIMATOR and breaking up with Jinx. Black Plague started the Deaths Head organization, a sectarian group bent on the absolute destruction of GI JOE and COBRA. Here, he could apply his knowledge of biochemical weapons and outdoor skills. One of the first campaigns of the Sinister Seven was a storm on the Iron Grenadiers weapons development lab and The Center for Disease Control.

Through mixing the two technologies...Black Death was able to create "super plagues" that could be used instantly on his enemies....often causing instant death for those who weren't vaccinated. As such, Cobra Vipers are constantly vaccinated against the new threats of diseases.

Black Deaths most powerful weapon is the "Pestis"...a modified Toxo-viper culture distribution gun. It can distribute a mild hemmorhagic flu causing his enemy to instantly swim in their own fecal matter, sweat, and vomit. More powerful doses cause instant and painful death, some reporting the very vipers vomited their skeletons out of their mouths. Black Deaths bullet rifle is rumored to also cause necrosis if not removed within a certain time.

But the Joes attempt to use Black Deaths weapon against him have failed. His skin turns blue when his body is filtering out the harsh toxins he's been exposed to. Each member of the team also is vaccinated against this...

Black Plague oddly is not an enemy of civilians. After the Crimson Guard attack on San Francisco....Black Plague knew that attacking civilians was wrong and that was what Cobra did. His range vipers are known to be quite caring...holding local camp meets and makeshift soup kitchens and taking care of the general community where ever they are staying and most of all, changing the Cobra name to represent "good" rather than "evil".

Serpentor was so enraged at this behavior, that Overlord brought him the COIL bounty hunters....Croc Master, Raptor and Big Boa to hunt down and destroy the Deaths Head at any cost.

Although the Joes new leader, Sci-Fi respects Black Plague and his Death's Head...He also realizes, that their dealings with biological weapons are simply uncalled for and will do everything in his power to stop them....for despite all good and bad, they are a nightmare to JOE and COBRA alike.
