So I found the 4" TDK Tumblers today, both versions and picked up the black one for use with my Joes. I am a vehicle guy. I love vehicles almost more than figures and I honestly haven't had this much fun playing with a vehicle in a long time.
While not true to scale, the fact that its designed for 4" figures means it should work with "most 4" figures" as the packaging tells you. It does fit in very well with my 25th Joes and Snake-eyes has already claimed this one for himself.
He fits very nicely inside the surprisingly spacious cockpit. I had to twist his shoulder a little to get his torso through the opening but there is more than enough room inside to position him comfortably in the drivers seat. With all this room I was quite surprised to find that there is no action feature, something that Mattell is notorious for in their Batman and other superhero figures. That alone is worth the $9.99 this retails for at Target.
Besides being spacious, the cockpit is nicely detailed. You get two sets of controls, one control handle on each side of the seat and the twin controls at the front (for when the Tumbler goes into battle mode). Snake-eyes can't reach the front controls but having them there allows customizers one less thing to put in if you deside to make a battle mode Tumbler. The figures legs have to slide into a couple of legholes and I found it easier to angle SEs feet pointing down to make it easier to get him inside. I think if you left them pointed forward he'd be okay but just in case I didn't want to chance it.
The exterior is extremely well detailed for a $10 vehicle. All the right plating and panelling is there in nice crisp detail. The few paint apps there are (headlights and copper detailing on the "wing" struts and forward wheel points) break up the basic black nicely. The camo version I saw in stores really makes the sculpt pop so folks opting for that one will be pleased. The hatch on the top is large but functional and stays shut though I can see the tiny closure wearing out eventually. The windows are done in a shiny black plastic to simulate glass and the rest is matte black as it should be. The "wings" on the back are made of that annoying soft rubbery plastic that seems to be the norm for pointy bits on kids toys nowadays and mine had a little warping but nothing noticable. I'm sure if you boiled it in hot water then repositioned it you'd be fine. The front tires are hard plastic while the rear are rubber with a hard "X" frame holding their shape inside. If you squeeze them (as I did) you'll feel the frame. Both sets of tires are extremely well detailed and look incredible.
All in all I am very VERY pleased with this purchase. I can see these easily flying off shelves, especially at the $10 price point. If I could I'd have picked up the camo version and another black to customize but the girlfriend only allowed me one. The camo version appears to be shortpacked as I only saw 2 among the 9 or so black ones at Target so if you find one snap it up. Hell snap up the black one too. Its a LOT of fun and well worth the purchase price. The fact that it does NOT have an annoying action feature makes it a must buy in my book and the rest is just Grandma's good gravy.
I cannot recommend this vehicle highly enough. The most fun I've had with my toys in months.
