I suspect it was either unstated to be set in the future, or perhaps the G.I.Joe universe had some technological leaps that we didn't have, and that had gone previously unacknowledged.
I know a lot of people hated Star Brigade. Me -- I like them.

DId anyone else ever think of Star Brigade more as G.I.Joe in the future than "modern" day G.I.Joe in space? |

The early figures seemed to be modern, talking about the escalation of the war and Cobra trying to establish new bases on the Moon and such. Destro's rivalry with Robo-JOE focused on the creating and duplicating of brand new Armor-Tech technologies... not very futuristic at all. But by 1994, some of the filecards read like pure science fiction. Space Shot was a freightor pilot who flew all around the galaxy before he was recruited by Duke. Sci-Fi is the best pilot in the *history* of space flight... Blackstars are a team of extra-terrestrial pillots who join forces with Cobra. This wasn't just GIJoe and Cobra fighting in the upper stratosphere... this was intergalactic civil war! And the Lunartix Empire... yeah, that entire subline started in the present day, but quickly became a futuristic revamp of the GIJoe concept. |

Something more along the lines of Robotech, Star Blazers and/or Exo Squad. I think the line would have done well if it had been more on it's own (still using joe parts and vehicles to keep the cost down...just not under the G.I.Joe banner) with original characters and maybe even some aliens on the team. But that's just me and my love for Sci-Fi stuff. |
