Check this out --

I wondered who had done some of that great character artwork for the movie-based packaging.

At the same time, I don't recall ever seeing this Sand-Viper. I realize he's basically a recolored HISS Driver, but I still think he looks extremely cool.

I believe that was the original idea for this set:

That Mike Thompson blog has made the rounds a few times. I know Justin did a big write-up on GeneralsJoes at one point. It's pretty cool to see the process for how the package art is put together.

Sidenote - Trekker, you might be interested to know that Thompson also did the character art for the packages of Matty's DC subscription figures.

I've got that HISS Driver, and I consider myself fortunate to have him and I'm very pleased with him, but that yellow-and-black Sand-Viper is seriously impressive. Shame he never got made.

Hmmm -- something for FSS 3.0, or maybe a Convention Paradrop figure? :-D

Really? I didn't know that, but now that you tell me -- and thank you, I'm not surprised. Those G.I. Joe package illustrations were some absolutely outstanding artwork in my opinion, and I have been similarly impressed with the DC Signature Series package artwork. This Mike Thompson has some serious talent going for him!

It indeed was.

Still wish we'd gotten it this way. Not just for the nicer colors, but also for the nicer cannon, instead of a reuse of the Ice Cutter's laser guns.

Oh, that just about makes me want to cry. I'm glad I have a Scout HISS, and I like the HISS Driver it came with, but -- maaaaannn... :-(

There's a set I'd still like to see happen somehow.

I don't remember ever seeing that before. Wish it was released like that. The colors are way better than the almost-black blue we got. Figure looks better, too.

I think his design is cool enough for a new named character. He's cool looking.

The artwork is fantastic.

I'm perfectly happy with that figure staying as an unproduced concept. It is ok in its own right, but there are enough HISS Driver figures as is.

Here's a pic from the Declassified Booth in Nola. One of the Declass volunteers got one from China and brought the figure for the booth.

Yeah, it's just a repaint.... but it still looks awesome. And had they released the scout hiss with that figure just like it looks in the image above then I don't think those little tank shells would've been so laughable as they are in powder blue and plain dark blue.

There's Desert Major Bludd and Desert Red Star. We don't know a whole lot about them. Not sure if there was going to be a Cobra 5 pack and a Joe 5 pack or what. The Red Star is a Red Star head on a Desert body.
I've only seen the Red Star briefly in person at Joe Con. Someone forgot to put it in the booth that year so I didn't really get a good look at it. I think only a couple have surfaced from China.
