Does any of you consider the new style Joes a Next gen? Like it had been pointed out Most of the Joes are Vietnam Era Veterans. So most may have had children and gone on to other things. so now most would be in their 50's to seventies.

I kind of think this a bit excluding the Marvel/IDW run which in Comic book land they are only 10-15 years older.
Just some thoughts for people stuck on a where to go whit their Verse.

Haven't really done that myself, but then I've been rather selective about which of the modern Joes I've brought into my collection, and there aren't a lot of replacements.

Generally I've brought in figures that were entirely new, like the Hazard-Vipers, ones that were entirely new and represented concepts that I thought were long overdue, like the Para-Vipers, and so forth.

Those I have of characters that did exist in the original line I just consider a different interpretation of the same character.

In my mind, I just remove reference to any real world wars and let it go as that. They can remain timeless this way. There is always some real world war that can be thought of as "the last war" when saying a character served. No real need to actually back a character in a corner now and put them into any war by designation.

Joes don't age, they only need a replacement o-ring once in a while :)

I whole heartedly agree.

Personally once I get the version I use as the definitive version, I rename the other versions as new characters.
Case in point ROC Breaker is a hacker named Keypad.

I guess I generally go with the Hollywood "reboot" principle and every ~5 years the Joes are fast-forwarded to the present at the same age. Though I did have a sanbox-dirtied Flash as a kid who eventually looked too battle-hardened so I promoted him to an old Colonel and he led the new recruits.

But I actually kind of like the idea of one set of classic Joes (Duke, Flint, Scarlett) taking on Cobra in the 80s, and a new set picking up the torch in the 21st cent. (Barrell Roll, Mouse, etc.). Could be fun to play it out that way and have sub-collections devoted to different time periods.

Though with certain characters, I like the Dread Pirate Roberts idea from Princess Bride, where the retiring guy mentors his replacement who will also be called by the same name, unbeknownst to everyone else. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow could totally be that.

Replicants, possibly nexus 3 series, with the originals' memories implanted.

Actually, I use a comic book style sliding time scale. Vietnam has given way to Iraq and Afghanistan.

my Joes don't age just like comic book characters don't

I hate the idea of the Joes having kids that grow up to also join GIJoe (looking at you General Flagg II). Not cuz it would never happen if Joes aged like humans but because it's contrived.

First, way back when this version of Snake Eyes from Marvel issue #2 was coming out in modern style that looked a lot like its o-ring counterpartI knew I had a dilemma. If Hasbro was going to re-release every ARAH figure did I want to re-collect all of those figures again? Did I dump one in favor of the other? Well Stealth Viper said something that stuck with me ever since, treat them like two different collections. It made sense. I collect GI Joe and I collect Star Wars, Marvel Universe, etc. While they might cross paths here and there for those part the only time they really interact is when I'm customizing and taking parts from different lines. I keep them segregated. No joke. My modern figures are stored in identical storage drawers and in the same way I group my ARAH figures. If the two styles interact in anyway in the background of a custom shot it is either a) no modern version for that character or b) intentional to show a difference.

Second, I won't say the Joes don't age. They just age a whole lot slower. Harrison Ford, James Caan, Sean Connery, all really old guys, but they are capable of bringing a strong presence on screen still even though they are well, well, well past their prime. Stallone and Schwartzenegger are in an action movie together (another ZombieGuide appearance) that is coming out soon, Escape Plan. Those guys are still bad asses. That is how I see Stalker and Snake Eyes. Guys in their mid 40's still capable of keeping up with the new blood the Joes have brought in every year since 82.

I'm with you. I always liked that Hama kept the file cards prety vague that way. The vietnam references were all referred to as "serving in SE Asia" or something, which allows me to still use their original origins by pretending that the reference is to some fictional conflict and not directly tying it to 40-50 years ago.
