I get that there is some talent and skill in that 3D CAD design stuff and yeah Shapeways is going to charge a premium for their services but I agree that $61 for this is a bit much. Definitely too much to army build this piece.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is what they do is they'll 3d print from your CAD data?

I've had an idea for some Trouble Bubble landing skids. Do I have to learn CAD or can they laserscan what I hand-build?

I was pretty interested in it, as I like the design and concept. But the prices are just too expensive currently.

Yes, you send them a 3d model file, they'll host it, and will print it for you in a variety of materials. For example, a joe scale rifle will run from 3-6 bucks.
I've been using Blender and some other free tools to create and upload models.

Yeah, Shapeways is great for small things, like guns and heads and stuff, but for larger items like this, it's really not a good route to go aside from prototyping. Things like this are better produced by casting. That's something that I've seen Alyosha doing that I wish other casters would get in on as well. Great stuff like this should be made more easily available to those of us that don't have bottomless pockets.

I like it but it just isn't worth that much money to me. Oh well.

you know shapeaway would probably be good for cranking out molds. if you can get a few hundred pulls from that mold the cost wouldn't be too terrible. But then you can get an aluminum mold for a couple grand so that is probably a better option.
