Over on General Hawk's site, he put up an interesting survey.

Quote:
Things get interesting when the retail shelves are bare, especially at Christmas time. It seems almost criminal to have a holiday season with nary a single G.I. Joe item to be found on shelves…but such is the unfortunate dichotomy that comes with a Hollywood marriage. The brand can live or die with the fate of the film, and for 2012 at least, G.I. Joe is a non-factor.

Hopefully with 2013 and the coming of G.I. Joe: Retaliation that will change. In fact, online stores are already offering pre-orders for the first two waves of G.I. Joe: Retaliation product, currently slated to hit in February. But with all of this G.I. Joe “down time” I got to thinking.

Over the past few years we’ve seen a LOT of great G.I. Joe toys come and go, and sometimes they either went too quickly, or they were somewhat difficult to get a hand on due to exclusivity.

Purely for the sake of discussion, and for the sake of gathering information, I took further advantage of the Survey Monkey tool and created a quick survey. Looking back through the Pursuit of Cobra, 30th Anniversary, and the 7-Packs, which figures were the best figures that you had the hardest time finding? What figures did you love the looks of, but were disappointed that you couldn't get your hands on?

The best example I can think of from my own perspective is a figure like Shadow Tracker, who I think is very cool, and was also very hard to find. The same could be said of Renegades Storm Shadow. However, figures like Zombie-Viper or Jungle-Viper were good figures, but not as hard to find. Of course your mileage may vary…that’s kinda the point of the survey. ;)

Essentially what I’m asking is if you could get access to some recently released figures again in single card form, which figures would you prefer? Check out the Survey Monkey survey below and share your thoughts!

I filled it out, and was surprised by the number of figures I did not want, or I had actually found at retail. Even more surprised by some of the figures I did want to see on a single card like the Cobra Island 7 pack Recondo. Anyway, check it out, fill it out, and maybe we'll get to see some neat data on what everyone wants. :generalhawk_member: :balloon_taters:

I'm confused by the survey.

Why is the opinion on the figure directly related to its availability? Croc Master and Crazylegs were very hard to find (their wave never hit retail in my area) but the figures are, IMO, nothing to write home about.

I don't think he's interested in which good figures were easy to find, because people likely own those. Want to know which good figures people couldn't find and might want to see re-released. The re-released is the more important aspect.

Maybe not, but we know Hasbro is in contact with GH, and they peruse his blog. I don't see the harm in it. ;-)

I started the survey, but realized that I've bought very little directly from retail myself... I don't hunt stores nearly as much as I did for say the 25th line... but I also have a local group of collectors who are pretty good about picking up figures other people are looking for and passing them on at cost....

Also as a Joe fan, I don't know how to take a survey without negative options... I would prefer the ability to rate a figure's quality separate from it's availability....

Also...

I Don't think this idea of "Reissued figures" Ever works very well... Often, by the time the Manufacturer can get more product produced and out to distribution...Demand has dried up.

It seems there is still a fair supply of POC and 30th Joe still caught up in the distribution network.... We're seeing it trickle out at places like TJ Max and Marshals... How many of these "rare and desirable" figures are still backlogged in that mess...?

And Lastly...

If Hasbro or the Club were to go and Reproduced some of these figures...What would we as collectors be giving up? I'd rather have a Quinn figure than ANY figure that's already been produced.

Just select no opinion on the figures you don't like. I based my answers on my assumption that many of these figures would not be showing up at TRU, Walgreens, or anywhere if the movie had come out in the regular scheduled time. I have no way of knowing if what TRU has been getting is old stock or a new run, so I'm just going off when the figures first were in store. Some I never saw. Some I only saw 1 times. Others like Arctic Destro hung around forever.

I wouldn't worry about if Hasbro may or may not see it. Ya never know with General Hawk! He's sneaky! Hehe.

I did have that same thought. The 7 pack Hit n Run figure for example, I'd much rather see the version from the vault then to see them re-release the 7 pack figure.

Arctic Destro who was both widely available and not as desirable got a No Opinion from me.

Where is the option for "Blast from the past" ARAH figures?

While I kid, I bet if you priced them at $5 a pop and used the vintage style packaging, you could get some parents thinking "Hey, I loved these when I was a kid!" and buy them as stocking stuffers.

What's this "blast from the past" ARAH figures deal?

Also, Hasbro's said o-ring construction was more costly than the current one, so I don't think they'd be up to selling them 5$ a pop.

The proposed BFTP figures shown in the MC newsletter were the worst kind of o-ring figure repaints, and everybody the world over is better off with them never having been released. And I am one who WANTS o-ring figures. They were that bad.

Ooooooooh!

The Past & Present sets!
Okay, yeah. Duke and Storm Shadow are pretty bleh, Snake Eyes is... decent (still the ill-fitting Roadblock waist? Really?), but Destro's quite spiffy. He's got the CP head in chrome! And the ROC Destro packed with it also sports a chromed head. That's really neat.
