I was told that there had been no mini figure version of Mindbender back in the day. But now I stumble upon this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-VINTAGE-GI-JOE-DR-MINDBENDER-MINI-PVC-FIGURE-/130683850940?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item1e6d5d50bc#ht_500wt_689

So does anyone know the source of this? It doesn't appear to be a custom...

He wasn't part of the 1988 micro figures:

Is there a compendium of all these "minifigures" somewhere?

He almost looks like an eraser. You haven't bought this yet? What gives?

Edit:

Neither are Mindbender but they look about the same style.

who cares where it's from, you NEED IT.

Seriously, that's no '88 mini-figure, not with that top notch paint job. the minis Hasbro made didn't have half that paint apps or detail that enigmatic Mindbender has.

If its something fake or custom, I DON'T need it. I'm curious where it came from though, too

There's some old threads on YoJoe and Hisstank about them. No one's quite sure where the Mindbender is from, but it seems to be official. Doesn't mean this one is, but it's a cool item, and relatively rare from what I can tell.

Cake topper decoration? I seem to remember they made some.

That's what I was going to suggest, too, especially based on some of the seller's other items (...I KNOW I had a birthday cake as a kid with that Batman figure they're selling).

Looks like an Eraser like those Beav linked to.

Yep, I'd say Beav had it correct. There was such a huge volume of other licensed items back then, it's hard to remember it all. But that still seems to me like what is missing these days. Lack of just flooding kids minds with merchandise and having them literally get hit from all directions like they did back then. But yeah, eraser.

almost looks like it could be a combat heroes, but they didn't make a mindbender... or else that line would still be going strong.

No copyright info, no dates or trademark info. Doesn't feel like an eraser, but I'm not going to test it. It's pretty well detailed for what it is though. Whatever it is. Still no idea of the origin, but it's pretty cool nonetheless.
