I haven't seen it, but apparently one of the characters in the new movie Young Adult customizes GI Joes. The bad news? We don't come off that great. The good news, the character is played by Patton Oswalt (who is awesome), who seems to actually know something about the hobby.

From an interview on Ain't It Cool News:

Quote:
Capone: Did the fact that this character was a basement-dwelling, action-figure-assembling guy, ever make you pause and go “I'm afraid people might think this is a little closer to me than it actually is.”?

PO: Well except that the bourbon making and the action figure stuff was all brilliant subtext to the character, I thought. It was actually kind of necessary, and I mean that is a very real person. That is a person that exists, and the one thing that I added to the scene was that when he mixes and matches the action figures' [body parts] to make them. That’s a very real thing that happens in the action-figure world with these guys that make the custom figures, and I was like, “Oh, how symbolic of what Matt wishes for his own life:'Why can’t I switch these legs out with a pair that works?'”

Ehh. A parody is only hurtful, if you let it.

Plus,, I'm sure there are people out there who are exactly the way Oswalt portrays.

Just remember, the face painting, over doing it beer drinking, butt grabbing, overly obsessive football fans actually exist. Yet those guys are loved and accepted as being ok. What's thought to be the cool crowd doesn't actually set the standards of those who are willing to step outside of the box. I ain't worried about what Hollywood wants to think... chances are they probably wouldn't like my perception of them.

And I wasn't saying it as "HURRR! ME ANGRY HOLLYWOOD BE MEAN!" I'm a huge Patton Oswalt fan and thought it was neat is all.

I think Patton oswalt is great. You know there are a lot of subcultures out there that are portrayed less than flattering or accurate. If anything, someone is going to look up action figure customizing and either think " these guys have issues" or "wow...that is some creative stuff". Personally I don't customize because I wish I looked different because I'm pretty damn spectacular, but this is how he approaches the character and more power to him.
