I was pretty much ready to go with at least one subscription from the moment it was announced in the Club roundtable, barring a ludicrously bad lineup or a ludicrously expensive price (while I would prefer much less than $25 plus shipping per figure, I don't think it is "ludicrous").
While I feel that there were probably some better character choices that could have been made, I'm ok with what we have. Without the Club having the budget and ability to create many new figure parts, I honestly don't know what lineup they could have given us that would have seriously impressed everyone. It's true that some of these figures are easy to customize, but as someone who doesn't get a lot of free time to focus on customizing, I'm fine with getting a figure like Quarrel that I could otherwise make myself. I read the "virtual customizing" thread where people came up with ideas for their own subscription lineup, and while I thought there were a lot of good ideas, I actually feel more excited about what the Club is giving us.
You know what else? There's no Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, Destro, or Storm Shadow in sight. Out of all the characters in the lineup, only Grunt has had a figure in the 25th-on era (I don't count ROC Cover Girl for hopefully obvious reasons). If my interest in collecting new figures is to be maintained, I need to see more characters that haven't been done multiple times over.
Are the figures worth $25 each plus shipping plus the Club membership price? If these were regular retail releases, definitely not. But, these aren't regular retail releases. I can give the Club leeway in the pricing because I know there is simply no way for them to produce enough figures to drive down the costs, not to mention the cost of more detailed paint apps. I hope the price is less, but I'm prepared to pay around that much to support the idea. The Club membership price doesn't factor in for me since I already get the membership for the convention. I also realize that I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford that, and I'm not criticizing people who don't want to pay that price for the figures. However, if the membership price is all that stops you, I'm sure there may be some people who are already in the Club that might be willing to help.
To be honest, if there is any Joe retail presence after the movie line is done (and I feel less confident by the day about the chances), I'm sure it will be some iteration with the core characters rehashed/reimagined, possibly based on whatever new animated series Hasbro airs on the Hub and cancels after 5 episodes. I'm also sure that the figure cost will go up again with the Retaliation line, just like it did with ROC - we've already seen the 30th figures almost universally get less accessories and less new tooling than was originally shown. Again, I'm not excited about that prospect, especially when we've gotten some really good versions of the core characters that would be extremely difficult to top.
So .... yeah, I support it and plan on getting a subscription.
