Post subject:  Issue 21 requests

Hey everybody. I was talking to the multimedia instructor here at the college I work at and I told her all about Silent Intruder. Now she wants to use it in class as an example of visual story telling. What I'm looking for is links to articals, or general information, or tributes issues, I can give her to suplement the comic. also if anyone has scans of the 21 1/2 issue from the comic packs that would be great too.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

The comic pack would probably work better as an example of failing to tell a story visually. There's virtually no cohesion to the narrative aside from the repetition of the original story. Where it attempts to change perspective and follow different characters, it does not aid the story nor give us any extra insight into those characters.

As far as homages, Marvel did an entire silent month a few years back where most of their books lacked dialogue, while the Joe series has repeated the ploy in Issue #84, Yearbook #3, and DDP #21 with mixed results. DDP #21 might even be the ultimate example of failing to tell a story visually, as the silent nature of Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes' final standoff does nothing to address their years-long conflict... despite the ironic title, "Closure", the issue itself offered none.

The Special Missions silent issue is pretty damned good too.

If you remember the Atlanta Con - Larry H did almost a panel-by-panel description of what his intent was, both graphically, and story-wise -- I wonder if anyone has a video of that ... unfortunately, I don't.

I'll agree the comic pack isn't a cohesive story. But I whole heartily disagree that it doesn't aid the original story. According to Larry Hama, the comic pack was supposed to be a deleted scenes kind of thing where it showed what happened between the pages of the original story. By itself it isn't that great, but as addition I think it is kind of cool.

During Hama's panel by panel break down of the story at the Convention in Atlanta, he sowed some really cool things. Like how the shape of a window from outside the castle showed where inside the castle Destro was sitting playing chess. Or how from the outset of the story he didn't know where the characters were headed and that he hadn't outlined the relationships between Destro and the Baroness or Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow until he got to those parts in the story. He laid the foundation for a lot of characterization and connections in this one story.

Oops... someone beat me to it... that's what happens when you take a lunch break in the middle of writing a post.

Yeah issue #21 is the best example I've seen in comics of a story told only by the the action in the panels. Maybe if some had lots of time and expendable comic pack comics they could integrate 21 and 21 1/2 to tell one very detail story.

To see how NOT to tell a silent issue, look at any of Mrvel's titles during the "'Nuff Said" event in 2001, some of those issues were downright perplexing.

Deadpool #42 (subtitled "A real american zero") is also a tribute (nay, parody) of 21. it can be found pretty cheaply at a local comic shop.
