By the time the DIC cartoon was on-air, I had already outgrown toys (temporarily, at least Was it any good? Any decent voice work or stories? |

I think that was still Chris Latta - pretty much the only voice actor holdover, correct me if I'm wrong, someone. Also Sgt. Slaughter and Lady Jaye? The two things that kill the series for me are the changed voices and bad music. The plots also got super-silly and cuckoo, but I've only seen a handful outside the first miniseries, which is sort of okay and has some cool characterization of characters like Copperhead, Lowlight, Scoop, Alley Viper, and Cobra Commander. |

It was Chris Latta as Cobra Commander, although he used an alias in the credits. Sgt. Slaughter voiced himself, of course. Not sure about Lady Jaye. Overall, in my opinion, the DIC series was vastly inferior to the Marvel/Sunbow series. The background music was repetitive and uninspired to the point of being massively annoying, the storylines were clearly written for an even younger audience than the original cartoon, and even the animation itself looked -- for lack of a better term -- flatter than the Marvel/Sunbow series. There was little in the way of character development. The Cobras, even Destro, generally acted like idiots. Even some of the Joes seemed to have their IQ's lowered somewhat. Some episodes I sincerely could do without ever seeing again -- "Kindergarten Commandos" -- the episode where Hawk is replaced by an android... that starts making jokes -- the episode where Grid-Iron challenges a Range-Viper to a Joe vs. Cobra football game -- the episode where Ozone gets turned into a giant bug... etc., etc... There were a FEW high points. I rather liked "Chunnel", which featured Cobra trying to conquer England and successfully kidnapping the Queen. Ironically, this episode first aired the day after a friend of mine from England arrived for a visit. He liked the episode, but pointed out a few inaccuracies And there was the two-parter where the G.I.Joe Team and Cobra teamed up -- if reluctantly -- to take on the HeadMan and his HeadHunters. For a DIC two-parter, I thought they played this very well and appropriately kept the comedy to a relative minimum. It was a serious topic, obviously. I will, however, maintain that the funniest line in all of the DIC production was during "Operation Dragonfire", when Gnawgahyde was cutting loose with the weaponry on board a Conquest, and remarked, "I haven't had this much fun since I mowed me lawn with a flamethrower!" On the whole, though, the DIC material just doesn't hold up as well as the Marvel/Sunbow by any means. I think the best thing that can be said about it is that it gave some animated time to some later-year characters that probably wouldn't've gotten much media time at all otherwise. |

Chris Latta did hold over for CC and Morgan Lofting did the Baroness for at least the first season. The one and only episode I saw was the one where Capt Gridiron played footbal against the Cobras. I thought the idea was stupid, the idea of a soldier wearing football gear was stupid and, if I recall, at the beginning of the episode, the Joes were playing a relaxing game of footbal when the president approached to talk to him. The president was a woman (nothing wrong with that), but just the fact that she just walked up, no security or anything. I did see Operation Dragonfire and though it wasn't bad, except for Slauter's Marauders' aweful uniform colours. They did make CC "human" again and de-evolved Serpentor though. The DiC animation seemed to be ok for MASK and Inspector Gadget, but for some reason didn't do well for G.I.*Joe. I started watching an episode online a few days ago, and started getting into it, but the pain in the butt part was not being able to immediatly identify the characters. |

In general it's terrible. The first 5-part mini-series "Operation Dragonfire" is worth watching, but it's all down hill from there. Some are pretty good premises, just poorly drawn... others are so bad you honestly have to get up and leave the room. This website is probably the most comprehensive review I've seen: http://www.geocities.com/thefreighter89/index2.html I also have an intermittent review of them going on CobraIsland.com I think the title is something like "Flint's comprehensive DIC cartoon review". I think this link will work: www.cobraisland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4745 |

The Dic show's music sounded like it was done on a old Casio keyboard. Hawk had the same voice actor as Sunbow for the first DIC season, changed in season 2, as did the Baroness's voice (you can tell comparing youtube clips). I'm not sure why Cobra had both Zarana and Baroness but the Joes had one token female per season (Lady Jaye for season 1, Scarlett for season 2). Though, IIRC, Zarana doesn't appear in season 2. It's a shame the episodes weren't better because there were a lot of new characters that could've benefitted from the media exposure. Red Star (as Captain Krimov) appears a few times, as does Big Ben. Some of the better premises were episodes "General Confusion" and "An Officer and a Viperman" (3 Joes join Cobra to find a spy). Season 2 was worse from what I could tell and even has 2 clip shows (damn, Dic was cheap!). Also, it's notable that 1991 stuff debuted in the season 1 of Dic, well before it appeared in stores. 1992 was the same way. I remember trying to catch the show just for a preview of what was coming up in the toy line. Some things turned out to be Dic inventions and the unproduced Battle Cycle appears in season 2. |

All the voices were awful, even returning actors from Sunbow were phoning it in epically. And Storm Shadow sounded like a bad imitation of TMNT's Shredder. |

Character/Sunbow/DiC Low Light/Charlie Adler/Maurice LaMarche Dusty/Neil Ross/looked and looked and looked, but couldn't find squat Cross Country/Michael McConnohie/looked and looked and looked, but couldn't find squat The only actors I've found that returned were Chris Latta (using a different name), Morgan Lofting as Baroness for the first season and Sgt Slaughter as a cute and fuzzy bunny. |

The DIC cartoon is one of things that every Joe fan really wanted to like, but just couldn't. I think we all wanted to see all the later 80s and early 90s characters and vehicles in animated form like Sunbow did. But when the character acting and stories just came out sooooo bad, you just hated it. I think this is why people keep asking about the DIC toons. They want to like them, but then are reminded that they suck really badly. I agree that Operation Dragonfire, which was the first of the DIC run, was worth watching. Most of the rest was all crap. |
