From the latest round of Star Wars Q&As:

Quote:
CollectionStation.com: Understanding that new tooling costs are a major prohibitive factor in creating playsets, has the Hasbro SW team considered digging out the original GI Joe Headquarters playset tooling to repurpose for the Clone Wars line? Its design is generic sci-fi enough that without resculpting it could pass as a Republic base - such as Rishi Station from "Rookiees" - with simply a different sticker sheet for the control panels. It has a landing pad, a hallway/garage for BARC Speeders, and basic features that keep costs down but fit Clone Wars play patterns. So, any thought given to this idea before? If not, what do you think, and what would its chances be?

Hasbro: Actually, we had not considered that, but that's a really creative suggestion, thanks. We don't know if it would work for various reasons including tooling availability, licensor approval, cost versus what we think consumers would be willing to pay. The fact is that it's probably too "flat" and a little boring compared to what a playset should and could deliver. Still, it's an interesting idea. But hey, taking that thinking one step further, doesn't the Terror Dome look very similar to a Separatist fortress? Anyone? Well, maybe not exactly, but that would be a dream come true!

While I totally disagree on the HQ playset, these dudes should really know better than to dangle any kind of Terror Drome bait like that...

:D

I'm really thinking that something is in the works. I mean they even showed a Terror Drome graphic at the G.I.Joe con according to the pics that was shown. They said no to it actually coming out, but still. I'm wondering if they are trying to redesign one so that it'll work in today's market plus now seeing that, they might be wanting to make it cross over to be a Star Wars item too with low retooling. It would make sense. They'd say no that it's not coming out cause it isn't finalized yet or even 100% that it is for sure coming until they get one rebuilt.

They showed the TD in pics as a backdrop, but stated point-blank that we are not getting a new one. The big H has given them the okay to use it in pictures and such, but there will not be a new TD released.
Granted, we've heard that before and then got the thing in question, but I'm doubting this happens this time.

I just figure something has to be in the works for next year. I figure they'll base it off the Pit playset, and if it sells well enough, I can't see why they wouldn't put out another "big" item. Maybe a Terror Drome? Maybe something else? Who knows, but I'd have to place a bet on some sort of "big" item being announced at Toy Fair 2010.

Oh it is horrible the way they tease us with things.

Since Hasbro is really loving the 4" figures these days perhaps some sort of generic base isn't a bad idea. Something that kids or collectors could use with GI Joe, Star Wars, Marvel, or any other 4" line that they come up with.

Why do they get such personable answers? Amazing.

A new Terror Drome, or even a Terror Dome, will never be made. The PIT isn't selling and I can see why. They aren't going to waste more money on something like that for G.I. Joe. Star Wars, sure, but not Joe. Just never going to happen.

If Hasbro wants to make a Star Wars Terrordrome that's fine with me! The wider fanbase for SW probably means that the Clone Wars line has a better chance of a Terrordrome than GI Joe does.

Truthfully though I have a feeling nothing Terrordrome sized will ever happen again.

As for the PIT not selling: It is around here! It's not even Christmas yet and already they're disappearing slowly.

Yeah the Pit is selling around here too. I still would think it's possible we may see something next year. Making it where it's a crossover item so they can get more legs out of it may work.

Yes, the original HQ is flat and boring. But nothing spruces up a toy like...SPRING LOADED LAUNCHERS! Hooray! Just slap some on any old boring toy and now all the kids will rave about it as they shoot each other's eyes out. :-P

I think the original G.I.Joe HQ would be a little too unworkable in Star Wars. Let's face it, the darn thing (I NEVER liked it) was little more than a parking garage for specific vehicles that are certainly not part of the Star Wars line. The jail cell was the biggest room in the place, too.

The Terror Drome is probably more workable since it's a little more fanciful and futiristic, but there are still some elements that would need to be overhauled, not the least of which are the Cobra-engraved parapets -- and what do you do with the Firebat launch elevator?

If this does happen, this will rise but one question out of me.

Why is it when a Star Wars playset gets retooled into a GIJoe playset, it's pure crap, but when the idea for a Joe playset to be brought over to Star Wars, it's a winner?

The amount of suck that was the Cobra Mountain play set had very little to do with it coming from Star Wars and a whole hell of a lot more that it was just a piece of crap. Even as a Star Wars piece it isn't any good. It is a facade of a play set with play features that didn't make a whole lot of sense and things put in places that made even less sense. Now, on top that they also didn't do anything to disguise the fact this was a Star Wars piece by leaving the molded on Battle Droids on the floor. The whole thing wreaked of cheap and lazy at full retail price.

On the other side of that same coin I really liked what Hasbro did when they turned the Star Wars Mustafar play set into the Indiana Jones Akator play set. They really tried to make those play features translate into the world of Indiana Jones. Whip swinging, quick sand, and giant boulder falling actions all are elements from IJ that they put into a toy. If anything I'd say they made it too busy by cramming all that stuff in. That is a pretty weak complaint. "You've made it too fun to play with." :-D
