Paging through the newest Lee's Toy Review today. Small section called "Hot Online Auctions". Seems a G.I.Joe SkyStriker in a "sealed" box sold recently somewhere for -- $3,500! Nothing to indicate it was AFA graded or anything, unlike some of the other auctions listed. Personally, I don't give AFA or any similar outfits much credibility, although I know some people do and it can and does affect auction prices. Apparently not the case here. But -- $3,500!??! Okay, it's a cool plane. It's arguably the best plane in the collection. I wish I still had mine. Heck, I wish I could travel back in time to that display I saw in a Target around Christmas 1984 or thereabouts where there were over a hundred of these things on the top shelf for $15 apiece. They all vanished by December 26, too. I am not at all putting down the SkyStriker. One of the finest items ever to make its way into the G.I.Joe collection. No argument there whatsoever. But seriously!? You could trick out one of these things to be an actual flying plane with radio-controls and a working missile launching and bomb-dropping feature, and I STILL wouldn't pay $3,500 for one if I had that sort of money to throw around on a toy. ANY toy. So, speculation time -- what would be a fair price for a MIB SkyStriker these days, and how in the world did this one get so high -- assuming something other than a multi-party bidding war between people with a rather astounding level of disposable income. |

I base prices on what I pay for something, certainly not on what any book says. As far as an auction goes, that single buyer put the price at 3,500, no one else. Perhaps to him it was the last item he needed to complete his MIB collection, and after years of hunting, he put down a huge amount to end the hunt. We'll never know, everyone pays based on thier own needs and situation. |

If this was they guy in Canada with the buy it now of $3,500, then I would just like to point out that I sent him a best offer for $80 and he never responded. |

That does seem like a lot. Then again, an MOC Skystriker is more valuable to me than some of the obscure "rare" stuff out there that sells for insane prices. If money was no object, and I was rich, I might consider spending a lot of money just to experience reliving opening up a brand-new Skystriker. But in reality I probably couldn't enjoy it knowing how expensive and rare it was. |

I know right, because $80 American has gotta be worth like $2,200 Canadian. Thats not that much off the asking price. |

I'd say someone way over paid. MIB with BIN for $265 That is ballpark for what I've seen lately. A loose complete one is running $40-80. These are all down from a couple of years ago. |

$265 for MIB I could see. Heck, if I had the $$$, I could readily see $350-$400. But not three grand. The mention in Lee's gave no specifics, so this might well have been this Canadian auction that Dream cited, I don't really know. Lee's might have just been trying to be a little sensationalist here. Come to think of it, there wasn't any indication in the magazine that the item actually SOLD at that price... Still something of a jaw-dropper that anyone would expect to get that. |

I could see 3 Grand for one of those true 1:18 super accurate F-14 models from Europe (I know they actually go for 10 Gs) but for a Skystriker, nah. |

fat_kids_joes wrote: But that ones funschool pluv I noticed that too. And this is probably why it hasn't sold, at that price. If I remember right, I only paid $50-$60 a piece for my Funskool versions, back around 2005 or so. The red missiles and super crappy stickers definitely kepp it from being worth $400+ IMHO. I wouldn't pay more than about $120 for a MIB Funskool version, and that would really be pushing it. For an original Hasbro Skystriker, I could see paying $400-$500 for one MIB, depending on box condition. I wouldn't even take a second look at one that has the phrase "AFA" attached to it in any way. |
