I've been holding off on really pimping my site these days, but I couldn't resist... cmderinchief from the Coil Club has shared a ton of awesome close up pictures of the upcoming M.A.R.S. Troopers 3-Pack, and I wanted folks to see these. The Baroness and Breaker has people a little down on the movie stuff, but I think these figures are really cool...

What does everyone else think?

Check 'em out here.

Justin

I dunno, they still look rather dull to me. Maybe useful as fodder, but thats about it. :-/

The packaging is translated in 8 languages, that means they will be available in Canada! Woot! :-D

I agree with TC, they are a little dull, but I like them anyway. They have alot of customs potential. I'll probably try to pick up a couple of packs.

Baroness and ''Breaker'', I'll wait to see more pics with their gear before I commit. :-/

I like these. The webgear and helmets are great, the figures make a good backbone force that can be used with IGs or Cobra, and the new pistols are sharp.

Would this be the first TRUE (and affordable...) MARS army builder set?

I'm pretty interested in it, might pick up three. I hate having an understaffed MARS HQ. :-(

Those guns are freaking huge, I suppose the movie will reflect that :-P

Other than that I am pretty cool with these although I do think they look better as cobra troops than MARS troopers.

They look like some sort of proto-Iron-Grenadiers. I find myself in agreement with most of the respondents here. Rather dull.

Yea I have to agree. They aren't bad figures, but they seem so dull. I guess we've grown to expect bolder figures out of Cobra and the IG. Just something missing to make them stand out.

With any luck the look works better on the big screen than it does in toy form.

I personally feel they completely suck. :-/
At first glance they look like an army of Overkills which is fine except that they are supposed to be IG's.

Why does everyone think these are supposed to be Iron Grenadiers? They're M.A.R.S. Troopers, which seems to indicate pretty strongly to me, that these are meant to be Destro's soldiers BEFORE the Cobra/IG connection/creation.

As such, I think they're a great starting point. Sure they don't look like full fledged COBRA operatives, but that's because they're not.

because those of us who have been with the Gi Joe lore know that there is only one army that is synonymous with Destro and it is his IG army.

These could be explained any way you want but the bottom line is if they are supposed to be Destro's troops they look nothing like 'em IMHO.

And which Justin rightly explained by them being PRE-Iron Grenadier. Security forces for the company which eventually morphed into his elite soldiers on down the line.

It's silly to expect Destro to just start the IGs along with the company. Just as it'd be silly for Cobra to start out right from the beginning with all the various specialty soldiers we've come to know them for.

Don't get me wrong, I have little faith in the movie any more but I just can't get caught up in complaining along these lines because it just doesn't make sense to me.

Ever since, oh, Tim Burton's Batman series, I've formed the opinion that the movie continuities are and need to be separate from the comics. It goes along with what Beav says above, in this case -- if the movie's showing the formation of MARS as an army, then it makes real sense that these troopers are not as stylish as the IGs.

OTOH, does anyone else see that helmet and think, "With a little sculpting, that's great for Budo." ?
