so, MightyMegs said something over in the Narceron 'drome thread about the Terrordrome being the best thing Hasbro has ever done ( <== paraphrasing there)

So, what's everyone else think? i'll take nominations until tuesday morning, then throw up a poll over it, and let's see if we can come together as a site to come up with the BEST PLAYSET or LARGE VEHICLE Hasbro has made for GI JOE. Oh, and to be 'unofficially' nominated, you must supply a reason for your nom.

i'll start:
Transportable Tactical Battle Platform: Sure, it was unrealistic, but for play value, this thing was tops in my book. I had helicopters landing, boats landing, things getting unloaded, and stored. I had communications getting relayed, and planes shot down. This thing was in the Arctic, Mountains, Desert, and Ocean. We hauled this thing around the house by the Dragonfly cables, and set it down on the deck of the Flagg. Seriously, the only thing this thing didn't have was a figure included as Platform Commander. Not bad for it's initial price point, which in my neck of the woods was around $15.

anyone else?

I'm nominating the Defiant.

Reason:
Simple reason why, It is hands down of one of the best play sets ever put out. I know it has some design problems but those are far outweighed by the sheet coolness of the vehicle. Not only do you get a pretty well armed and very play worthy Crawler but you also get probably one of the cooler vehicles that could be based on a real life space shuttle.Oh I dont forget that it comes with 2 very nice figures as well, I really like the design of the payload figure not to mention that he also comes with a very realistic propulsion suit to go on his back. If payload wasnt so hard to come buy I would army build him all day long. Hardtop is also another great figure and very realistic from what Ive seen from trips to the Kennedy Space Center. Growing up as a kid I was always fascinated with anything NASA so what I great way to tie in my love of space flight with my favorite Toy lines. For me nothing is better than the Defiant.

I'm going to go with the Terror Drome. It's big but not unmanageably so (like the Flagg), it's more generally useful than the Defiant (which, while awesome, is pretty purpose-specific), there's tons of stuff going on in it, lots of play features that don't get in the way of cosmetic appearance, it came with an awesome mini-vehicle, and is just a great, iconic Cobra base.

I know I'll be the only one to say this, but I would have to say IMHO the Thunderwing is my favorite ever Joe toy. I mean you look through the engines and you see what a pilot sees on his HUD (Heads Up Display) and you switch from bombs to missles and the hud changes so that you can see what you are shooting at.

It can tell if you are banking left, right, in a climb or decent.

Like I said, I know I'll be the only one, but MAN I love that thing.

I have to go with the Flagg, I was 34 when I finally got it, felt like a kid again, Thing is beyond huge and have had storage problems ever since, but wouldn't trade it for the world. The play value is unreal, I didn't even think of how much fun I could have with it until I had it (while many complain its just too big for play value, I argue the opposite.

It's not my MOST prized posetion (the honor goes to Cap's dio of 1:18th town, which you can see by clicking my sig ;-) and my original Milenium Falcon), but its in the top ten.

Terrordrome is in the top ten as well, just for the recoord.

To be honest... the toy that got me into GI Joe: Amphibious Personnel Carrier.
I still have the same one and only one (though i wish i had more)
I may have only had five Joes (Backblast,Snake Eyes, Stalker, Deep Six and Scoop all from 1989) when I got it but my goal was to fill it *Which I soon did*. The toy played rough both indoor out door very well.

For a vehicle, I'll go with the Warthog. It's bulky, intimidating, and ugly (in that beautiful way). It's been put out in three different color schemes now, so pick the one you like best and go with it. :-D

For a playset, it's the original HQ for me. It had two vehicle bays, built-in weapons racks, a computer lab/communications room, a holding cell, even a furnace/powerplant thing with a removable cover. It was modular, too. In terms of its size, it wasn't as overwhelming as the Flagg or the Defiant.

Oohh, I love the thunderwing and APC and I was sooo happy when I got both, well, a couple years ago, lol.

But I'm gonna stick with Drome. I like the prison cell, I always imagined the area under the launch was for prisoners as well, just less fortunate ones as they would be killed if the firebat launched, lol.

speaking of, it never bothered me that the firebat launching would wreck the control room, lol.

I have to agree with the TTBP nomination nom. Price point, versatility, and fun. This set has it all.

Rolling Thunder. It has all the mobility of a big vehicle and the features and playability of a playset. It's just big enough to have enough play features to keep you occupied yet not overly huge to cause storage or space issues. It's also the only big Joe vehicle/playset I had as a kid. I used this all the time in all my Saturday Morning Bedroom Battles.

normally, I would pick the R.H.I.N.O. as my favorite vehicle, but it occured to me it may be too small for this discussion.

That being said, My vote also goes for the Rolling Thunder. a large vehicle, big enough to be considered a playset. but functiones as a vehicle. I actually have two, (removed the missiles from one and use it as a troop carrier) and the play value is off the chain! can fit ten figures comfortably, (12 if you squeeze em) and probably was the operations command center (before The R.O.C.C. was introduced)

as for playsets, I would go with the original Joe heaquarters, the Modular construction made it perfect for assembly and breakdown (and storage, i just slid it under my bed). great playability (especially the addition of vehicle bays), and seemed to have enough space for all the original joes.

(although I questioned having a jail right in front of the control room.)

I just feel compelled to go with one of my old stanbys - either the Whale or the Tomahawk.... I think the Whale wins out.

I loved this thing as a kid, and I still love it today. Tons of play value, held a bunch of figures and was just oodles of fun. And it was affordable enough that I was able to have one when I was a kid. It was one of the first things that I went for when I got back into collecting 10 years ago ( :O )

it's an either-or, not both nomination, KOP -- which one Hasbro Joe release is your favorite?

i'd say from your paragraph that the Rhino is your favorite...yes?

well,.. since you allowed it.. yes.

The R.H.I.N.O. was the quintessential vehilce, one a lot of us had been waiting for the entire line!!! Gave us a self sustaining vehicle with troop carring ability, heavy weapons, and its own air support!! Although the driver was kinda unimpressive, it was an OK mold, and hey, one more pilot!

This vehicle fulfilled that Aliens APC fantacy (which you can tell it was based off of) where tons of Greenshirts or your night force would come screaming out of, ready to kick Cobra (or alien) butt. I personally bought three of these and made them My default APC for the Mega Marines (along with some repainted Monster Blaster APCs), Night Force, and one for the 07 Joecon set Joes to ride in. (finally providing Covergirl with an updated and face protecting vehicle)
