Didn't they do this before, with the PDDs or some others?

Yep. SDCC PDD's were available on HTS AFA graded.

I REALLY think this is bad taste.

Hasbro controls the quality of these things, to a degree. I understand that WalMart gets cases in and the packages are liable to get dinged up a bit, but they still sell for $6 or whatever.

So Hasbro gets the A+ quality ones direct from the manufacturer and jacks up the price 10xs?

I don't collect AFA crap so I really don't care. I just think that this is REALLY going to rub people the wrong way, kinda like when I pay $40 a month for cable internet and when I call to [LASER BLAST] about connectivity issues, they say 'Hey, for $60 a month we'll see you a plan that NEVER goes offline!". Gee, thanks....I'm now a DSL user for life as a result.

Well, I guess I know what I'll be talking with Hasbro about at this years convention on behalf of everyone. Anyone else wanna join me?

How is that a variant? I never heard of a variant Eel. What's different about it?

Unless I get a huge discount and free shipping, I stay well away from HTS. And I have no use for AFA grading as I use my toys.
But there really is something unethical about them selling AFA graded stuff. Its really shady.

What makes me bad about this is Hasbro can claim to have sold out of a figures when there are still AFA versions left over. It isn't like they are some limited edition, specially created figure. They are the same figures made at the same factories. The extra value is arbitrary.

Hasbro can do what it wants, and I suppose this is just an acknowledgment of the market segment that those who do pay attention to the AFA represents, but what the AFA does represent in the toy collecting world is something that I find pretty repugnant. Like Zedhatch said -- free them from their plastic prisons!

For whatever reason, I was recently thinking of a line I read about comic books one time. "Yeah, all of these talented creators work their butts off to come up with interesting characters and dynamic stories, and find artists to present these tales in as much four-color detail as possible, just so you can seal the thing away for fifty years and never read it!"

Work that around a bit for action figures -- All these talented designers and sculptors get together to create interesting characters or match them to their movie likenesses, come up with an overall design for the figure that hopefully allows for as much articulation as possible while being reasonably unobtrusive in the design whenever possible, hire workers to mold, paint, and assemble the figures, give them interesting accessories -- just so you can leave them in their packages and never bend a single point of movement just so they're "worth more"...

If Hasbro wants to grade figures and pass the charge onto the consumer, I'm not going to buy it, so what do I care? Meanwhile, even the figures that come from Hasbro graded are not "10s," so that curve affects all AFA graded figures in my mind.

This same reaction came out when the SDCC Destros were sold AFA-graded on HTS, only much stronger. I swore of HTS at that time and only bought from then after when they were the only ones with the Ultimate Cap/Fury 2-pack for retail.

I realize there is a market for this stuff but when the manufacturer is selling it that really sends a message to the collectors. Its like if DC and Marvel started selling CGC graded books. Corporate sponsored scalping in my opinion.

I've never understood the concept of "official" grading of items like this. You're basically paying for one persons/groups opinion and a fancy plastic box. Overpaying in my opinion. Thanks but no. I'll get the plastic box from ProTech (at a huge savings) and savor my own opinion of the item because ultimately that's the only one that matters.

uh, that plastic box/case isn't that fancy. and yeah, it's just some rednecks in an armpit suburb of Atlanta doing the handling/grading. and the comic shop isn't even open on weekends (i think...could be wrong on that.)

I just want to reiterate that HTS isn't Hasbro. What I recall from some last Q&A sessions is that they are licensed by Hasbro.
I'm not sure what control Hasbro has over this stuff.
I can't believe that some of these are already marked "sold out". A fool and his money ... I guess.
I am also a bit annoyed because I've ordered this wave & they haven't shipped to me yet.
