We're getting a look at the second part of G.I. Joe #0 at Newsrama.

One word: AWESOME.

Granted, it's only a 5 page preview, but it is EXACTLY what I want to see with a G.I. Joe concept and title, and immediately makes me almost happy they're forgoing existing continuity to start fresh. Very cool.

Chuck's preview was awesome.

Larry's preview made Chuck's look like... well, hardly crap, but...

WOW.

Okay, I love this for what it is, but I love it even more because Duke says he has a sister in Spokane, my own little neglected hometown. It's about time we got some comic attention other than Apocalypse's forces destroying us in AoA!

....and new Hawk looks like he should be portrayed by Claire's father from Heroes.

That brings a tear to the eye.

Very cool. It brings GI Joe the covert level that I always wanted it to be.

Bleh. Don't think the premise that seems to imply that Duke is a member of the team basically against his will and would seem to imply that for all the other team members. That's crap.

I don't think so. I think it implies they "volunteered" by their own "choice". :D Even though he knew he couldn't say no, he did say he was in. I personaly felt that was a great back and forth conversation. Hawk laying out the subtle context and Duke getting frustrated at what he was reading between the lines.

HA! I could totally see that. I re-read it and inserted his voice and it totally fits.

As I say, crap. I don't want my Joes forced into this, forcibly separated from their families ("Hey, we told them you were dead and you'll never get to talk to that sister of yours you seem to care about ever again! Isn't this great!?!?!" ), not given a *real* choice and instead railroaded onto the team.

If you guys like it, more power to you, but if this is the tone of the book, I'm not interested at all.

I'm cutting them a little bit of slack since this is the beginning. In essence Duke is the "franchise player" of GI Joe along with Snake Eyes. If Hawk is building his team and he thinks he absolutely needs Duke, SE, Stalker and whoever else, then I could totally see him saying and doing whatever it is he thinks he needs to in order to get them on board. As the story moves on and the team expands, I could see more invitations to join rather then railroads. I guess we'll see when the comic starts.

True, I can see that too, but I just hate seeing it set up this way. I'm not a Duke fan by any means but I don't see that character as someone who needed this treatment to get him to join up. Duke would jump at the chance to do something like this. Not ask questions or need to be forced with the "Yeah, everyone thinks you're dead now and if you don't accept you might possibly end up that way" treatment. Same with those other guys you mention.

It feels very heavy-handed and borderline cliched to me.

I have to agree with Beav on this one, I don't care for the idea of the members of GI Joe being coerced into serving on the team, it reminds me of the Suicide Squad from DC. What happens when they want to leave the team, are they given a new identity, or is there only one way off the team?

I know I'm reading too much into a five page preview, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Took the words right out of my mouth with that one. Only I'd leave out the "borderline" part, this IS cliche, and worse it's B-movie cliche; and the Hawk sitting at that table is no Hawk I've ever known or imagined. <shudders>

I don't mind the idea of GI Joe being a bit harder-edged when it comes to getting the job done but this...I feel like it's a male version of "La Femme Nikita".

I couldn't put my finger on where I felt this premise came from, just take out the death sentance and you got it.

Cliche-definatly. Not likeing it.

Two of the things we know about IDW's GI Joe, specifically the Hama book:

1. Its a reboot, so Larry has free reign to tell things a bit differently.

2. This is over 25 years after he did it the first time. From hearing him talk at conventions and in interviews, he's pretty much seen and done it all. That may give him a little bit more cynical outlook about things.

I'm willing to give these new books a real chance at recapturing old Joe readers while attracting new ones. The biggest thing that I've read about them that gives me hope is how Chuck Dixon is really trying to capture the mix of real, normal, people being heroes, while making sure to mix in a lot of that real military jargon and interaction that Larry made a big part of the original run.

That, and most every time you read an interview with just about anybody at IDW involved with Joe, they seem to be able to speak with great familiarity about the product. That was not something I got all the time from DDP.
