I was prowling on Yo Joe a moment ago and came across the 1992 Sonic Fighters AH-74 Cobra Helicopter I was wondering if anyone had better pictures of this thing and any recommendations on buying one. Is it worth it? Is it fun to play with? Steve |

Quote: Is it worth it? Is it fun to play with? Yes and No. From a Collector stand point just about any complete end of the line vehicles are gems since you so rarely come across them in any good condition. That doesn't mean they aren't out there it just mean the same group of collectors are fighting for the same limited amount of oppertunities to acquire one. It is a pretty interesting piece because of the Sonic Fighter flight stick gimick and the fact it is based ona cool looking helicopter. From a toy perspective it is a weird mixed bag. First it is under sized, even for GI Joe. Almost like it was upsized slightly from smaller scale toy line which is what I've heard rumored it was. It lacks any kind of paint detail and overall the plastic quality just isn't up to the quality you'd expect of a GI Joe vehicle. Overall I'd be lieing if I said I wouldn't pick one up if I could score one on the cheap, but after handling a few I'm not going out of my way to track one down either. |

I had three of these at one point. Here's a picture of two of them: ![]() I've sold them all. They're kinda nifty if you can find them cheap (which is hard, because they aren't all that easy to find, and some people have quite the high opinion of how much they should go for), but not really worth going out of your way to get. See the slice figure in the picture sort of hanging out of the cockpit? That's the only way figures will fit in. Some larger ARAH figures won't even fit at all (and there's no way any new sculpt or 25th style figures will ever fit). It's also extremely fragile, and the labels are horrible (I don't know why, but they are much lower quality than even other vehicles from that year...they flake right off). And yeah, it was an upscale from Hasbro's Flying Fighters. I don't even think it was scaled up. I think they just took out the seat divider and made it one big seat. Here's the instruction sheet for the Flying Fighter's version: http://www.hasbro.com/common/instruct/F ... giment.pdf |

Thanks Guys - the box picture looked really neat and I wondered if this was a diamond in the rough... too bad it is undersized for my tastes |

Yeah that's all they did is took the inner parts out of the cockpit and made one big seat. I have the Flying Fighters Apache and when I saw they made the G.I.Joe version I figured they had upscaled it. Based on the way it looked on the package I had hopes that it was, but it's not. The helicopter it's self is cool but due to how crappy a figure looks in it, it's not cool. Plus the size make it look like a remote control drone rather than a helicopter to fly. I remember when I was younger I imagined it to be a stashed "quick escape" vehicle. Something that G.I.Joe would drop in an area that an agent was doing a quick in and out stealth mission. It was made to look like a full size Apache, but was made small so it was easy to hide. That about the only way I could think of it being any reason to be so small. |

Yeah, the design is great, but the scale is a nightmare (although I rather like J-Man's explanation for it). It was supposed to be part of the Flying Fighters line, which wasn't especially close. I'm pretty sure what we had here was a case of the molds being ready and Hasbro not wanting to waste them. Economically it makes sense, but the final result -- One sort of finds oneself making bad jokes to justify the size problem. "I know they said Pentagon budget talks meant we were going to get scaled down, but come on, already..." "All the capabilities of an Apache with 2/3 the target profile -- and it sounded so good on paper!" "Maybe if I dressed as a clown I could fit into this thing better..." "No, the crowbar isn't to lift the canopy if it doesn't raise on its own, it's to pry yourself out of the cockpit seat after you land..." "Well, great, I just fired my entire complement of missiles, and all I did was bump the console with my elbow." "Everybody else gets to land on the USS Flagg. What do I have to do? Aim for the Devilfish..." |
