This week's profile is the 1990 Ambush. He's not a memorable character, but he is a solid figure.

Enjoy!

I totally agree that I think the 1990 figures are way underrated. Ambush, Salvo, Bullhorn, Pathfinder, Freefall, Stretcher, Undertow, the Night-Creeper and even Sky Patrol are among my favorites. Most of the rest are pretty good too, and even Capt. Grid-Iron is decent when separated from the football gimmick gear.

EDIT: I forgot to list Rampart as one of my favorites.

Agreed as well on the 1990's figures, to me it was the last hoora before the line got into constant rehashes (although some like Roadblock were very solid). But 1990 had mostly original characters and ideas, not all were great, but they were new.

Ambush was very memorable in that I always thought he was astrailian or british, I think it was the mustashe (I had only seen it on peoples from those contrys at the time). Still I liked him a great deal.

Great as always Mike.

I like the Ambush figure a lot. I was never crazy about the helmet but the rest of his gear makes up for it including that crazy pistol. What I find interesting is that the figure is actually noticeably shorter than a lot of the other Joes. I thought that was a cool little touch for a guy who spens most of his time roaming throught the jungle and hiding in the bush.

I agree with others who suspected he had a British or even Australian accent. It just fits what I see in the figure with the mustache, uniform and rifle.

As for his role I always have him be the last man in the recon group. The guy who covers the tracks and leaves little traps along the way for anyone that might be following the Joes. While most soldiers are content on bringing the fight to their enemies, Ambush tends to be more intrigued by how to bring his enemies to the fight, where ever he has the most advantage. Kind of like how you would ask a EOD guy how to blow something up, you'd ask Ambush how to bait someone into a trap.

Nice review.

I agree with you guys, the 1990 line is greatly underrated.Just this past year I've managed to find good-quality examples of about half of them-Rampart,Freefall,Altitude,Airwave,Drop Zone, and the Night Creeper, and all these guys have kind of become the new highlights of my collection.

Excellent sculpting, great color schemes, and cool accessories-1990 was a very good year!

I love Ambush. I had never really known he existed until Sidetrack came out, so that was particularly cool for me. I hate his guns though. Even before Hasbro went nutty with them releasing them with every other figure, I always thought they were a bit clunky.

his camo tent worked so well that i lost the figure when i set it up in my grandparents back yard. :shifty: :whistling:

so to this day i kinda hate the figure b/c of that. but he's got those [LASER BLAST]' muttonchops like the guy from Motorhead...

Another great profile. I agree that most of those 1990 figures call to wayside. I remember when I got a complete Ambush in the early 2000s and thought "who, this figure has a lot of play value."

I really enjoy reading your profiles, and your memories of individual figures and years.
