well, the wife tells me all the ones she knew spent the majority of their time relaying orders from higher ranking officers to NCO's, lol.

But I think Capt Rivas was the highest ranking guy we knew, and it was not socially.. . the man had to be part machine.

Yeah it is always funny how the ranks on Joe Cards seem to fluctuate...except for Duke - he seems to stay an E-8 forever (but it does vary between 1stSgt & MSgt).

As for the Navy Warrants. The Torpedo thing is a little funny too because they list him as a "WO-5" in 1997. The Navy warrant ranks go WO-1 (not used anymore for Navy), CWO2, CWO3, CWO4, CWO5. And the Navy Chief Warrant Officer 5 was not established until around 2002 (the first one promoted here: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/First+Nav ... 0113305747)

Here is a Warrant Officer Link from the official website: http://www.navy.mil/navydata/navy_legacy_hr.asp?id=268

Probably TMI, but what the heck, I had some free time lol. :-D

Oh, and look closely and you'll notice that the guy with the decent beret is a Warrant Officer ;)

On another note, something I noticed - and please Chief correct me if I'm wrong - is that bottom pick mirror-imaged or something? To my knowledge a US beret should go flash on the left, and slanted/tapered off to the right; it looks like his is reversed, like some other countries wear them.

???

In his 90's incarnation, he jumped up to CSM (Command Sergeant Major, E-9). That bothered me a bit too, he will always be Top to me.

I was looking at Deep Six also, for the most part he is listed as an E-7 Chief Petty Offcer (CPO), but at one poiint he is listed as ND2 (rates not rank) yet Master Diver Qualifed. ND2 is (I think, it has been a few years) a second class diver, which is usally an E-4 or E-5. The Army followed the Navy's convention of associating ranks and rates for divers after a few instances.

So I think it could be Chief Deep Six more so than Chief Torpedo, but it does not seem to sound as good.

I am sure some good intentioned souls try hard at Hasbro to make it all work, but I am sure we will always have this friction when reality and fantasy collide. etiher that, or like our Chief said: they are just ignorant.

I forgot about that E-9 jump, good call Tsu. Yeah Navy rates are definitely "unique" to say the least. I have always said that I wish we could just use "Petty Officer __ class" over all the rates. I mean, you really can - but when you call a sailor Petty Officer Doe instead of "Hey BM2," you get funny looks because he's like "this blankety blank doesn't know who I am or what my rate is." lol.

For those that care, the Navy rates are basicaly bass-ackwards. So if you have a Chief that is a Navy Diver, the abbreviation is NDC = Navy Diver Chief; For a Senior Chief = NDCS = Navy Diver Chief Senior.

THEN... if you becom a Command Chief (think Chief of the Boat from Crimson Tide) then you just lose your rate insignia and become CMDC = Command Chief, CMDCS, etc.

Great system huh - not confusing in the least :-D

Actually, that one is pretty close to exactly how you're supposed to wear them. The "flat material behind stiffener" is the way the guys at Bragg (Airborne and SF) have been wearing them for as long as I can remember - and they're pretty much the experts on berets.

Ah man! Personally I think that's quite ugly. Sorry, just my opinion! :-) I think they should be worn like Falcon. Most European armies wear them like that. But hey, it could be worse:

If you're talking about the dude in arctic gear, he's a foreigner -- don't know from where, though. His gun makes me think he's French, but I don't know -- I can recognize UK, Aussie, German & Canadian "standard" uniforms pretty well, but other contries and types of uniforms escape me.

Over the last few years, those involved in special programs have switched to rates. We're now rated ND(Navy Diver - divers), SB (Special Warfare Boat Operator - SWCC), or SO (Special Warfare Opererator - SEALs) to allow guys to test and advance better in their rating, as well as granting the senior members of the Specwar communities more control as to who promotes (rather than having a craptastic operator make Chief on an EM board).
