Media wise, any line needs a cartoon. Give it writing similar to Batman: TAS or Young Justice. The toys need to be out at the same time as the show, not six months later, after the show's been cancelled because the non existent toys aren't selling. More importantly in this day and age, there needs to be a tie in, multi-platform, free to play game. It needs to be playable from web browsers, smartphones, tablets, and game consoles. Give it cross play between all the platforms. Include some code or something with all the figures, that unlocks things in the game.
Totally agree there needs to be coexisting cartoon. The problem is the constant spew of psudo-reboots have made people wonder "What is G.I. Joe nowadays".
Corney isn't going to work, woosification isn't going to work. Cliche isn't going to work.
I love the idea of a free-to-play game tie-in. odd thing is that the military specialty and international aspects of G.I. Joe make it perfect for character customization and would lend itself well to an MMO.

Hasbro blew it another way by not licensing out to NECA for Heroclix.
Heroclix would be a nice format for large scale battles.
Then again, they own Wizards of the Coast, so a table top RPG or miniature war game would seem like a great extension of the brand.
I read somewhere that this is why they didn't go with NECA/Heroclix, that they had some other idea for a miniatures game. However if I remember correctly it sounded very kid-ish, not something the likes of us would appreciate.
