Simple solution: digitally de-age him for the tenm minutes it takes to tell the origin. Then give us seasoned, graying temples Hal for a full-blown story that doesn't require him to bumble through training.

If they insist on adapting Green Lantern into another film (and it sounds like they do), this is the way to do it. Established Hal is a thousand times more interesting than Learning-to-be-a-GL Hal.

Hell, Hal's debut comic basically had a short story where he gets the ring from Abin, and then BAM two stories of full-on Hal Jordan versus villains action.

Of course, the thing is that was then. When all there was were Hal, Abin and a ring.
Now, if you do a GL feature, you have to have Sinestro, and you have to have the GL Corps, and you have to have the Guardians....

Off the top of my head- House, Monk, Psych (heck make it the entire two man team), Larry the Cable Guy,

But most importantly Dr Who and River Song

Ok, Monk would be funny as hell to see running around the Pitt. House's attitude would last until someone slapped the smug out of him (probably Duke, Flint, Snake Eyes, or Hawk). The Psych team I'm not sure of (not a fan of the show). Larry would be interesting to say the least.
The Doctor and River could be fun but overly heavy on the sci fi/fantasy aspect that some people might be turned off by.

Another group I could see is the cast of Burn Notice. The slightly military, but mostly spy action transfers easily. Plus we'd finally get a good Bruce Campbell figure that everyone could get their hands on. (I still haven't seen an Army Of Darkness Ash figure  )

Being a Renegade would put him at endless odds with Sgt. Slaughter.

Yeah, but this would be Joe era Sgt Slaughter and not McMahon Corporate Stooge Slaughter. Plus I'd love to see him go through the Slaughter House.

Doesn't really matter which era Slaughter's from, Stone Cold just gives Stunners to everyone because it's what he does. Including good guys who did nothing wrong beyond declining a beer. Or good guys who took the beer.

Yeah Sgt Slaughter of the latter years fit better with Cobra then he did GI Joe. They had him carrying an Iraqi flag into the ring in the late 90's

House would have to be a presidential appointment. He could have saved the presidents life and be appointed to the Joes with full backing of the red phone. A civilian contractor to the team. After all GI Joe is made up of the best and he was the best in his field

The Rock...oh wait...nevermind.

It is sad, but in this day and age, I think it is safer for a toy company to not associate itself with athletes or celebrities. All it takes is one scandal or reckless moment and you ruin an entire year's campaign. It would be way safer to do a Larry Hama figure or some other Joelebrity or tie it to another Hasbro property like Jem or MASK.

If we're going to throw in Marvel comics characters, then Wolverine. He's got tons of military and covert ops experience.

The origin of Snake Plissken as a Mercer-type guy, before the world goes all to hell.
